    ... of the war. There are red and black Nazi swastikas on all the buildings and big, black German military cars in front of them. A few days after these were taken most of the town was destroyed in a huge bombing raid by the Allies. The big entrance tower to the town and the buildings immediately next to it are still there but all the surrounding streets are new.     ... that, we stopped at a small town for lunch. A group of six of us chose to avoid the prices of any cafés or restaurants, so we decided instead to get some food from the local grocery store and have a picnic.     ... for over an hour and a half and saw no one. not a soul. We did learn that the supermarket opens at 8am the next morning. We also learned that General de Gaul visited the church in Erstein to attend midnight mass Christmas Eve 1944.
