Calle Hoyos 8 Potosi, Bolivia, 591-4-6224265-
Just two and a half hours in a 'shared taxi' from Sucre to Potosi. Not a great selection of hotels so, after checking a couple of grotty looking options, opted for an 'upmarket' one (over twice the price of the Sucre hotel, but still under 40 Euros!). It's comfortable and central heating, and I am very glad we were in a good hotel here ... Potosi is the highest city (around 4100 metres) of its size (c110k) in the world and is set in desolate surroundings. It got fabulously rich in colonial ti...
Potosi, Bolivia aandlPotosi is the highest city in the world, it sits at an altitude of 4200m, it really does take your breath away, in more ways than one. When we got here the hostal we had earmarked was full, so we had to run round like headless chickens until we could find somewhere to stay. The place we ended up in had no heating and it was BALTIC. It was only compensated by the amount of blankets we had, think Princess and the Pea and you would be close!!!! It is famous for it's silver and mineral mines whic...
Potosi, Bolivia bigusredusIn the morning the I went to Centro Piloto to get my Yellow Fever Vaccine just in case I wanted to go for a jungle tour. I catch a bus from Zona Del Cementry to Copacabana for 2 pm getting to town around 6 pm. The cost is about 15Bs if you get it at the station. The ride is great. Try to seat in the left hand side of the bus for the great view during the ride. I stayed in Hostal Colonial with the great view of the lake Titicana from my room. With hot shower and breakfast only 35Bs. I booked t...
Copacabana, Bolivia canadiansmileyIt's a four hour bus journey to Cochabamba during which we enjoyed Point Break in Spanish. Whoever had the job of providing the voice for Keanu Reeves's character made the mistake of actually delivering his lines with emotion For 80 Bolivianos we get a spacious room with private bath and breakfast on the sun terrace in the Hostal Colonial.
Cochabamba, Bolivia davidbowmakerAfter our final great breakfast in Copacabana we made our way to the main square to get the bus to La Paz. As ever there was a bus just about to leave so we grabbed the last tickets, loaded our packs onto the top of the bus and squeezed into the last two back seats with all the locals. We had quite an eventful bus ride, after an hour we had to get off the bus so we could cross the lake. Our bus was loaded onto a precarious looking contraption which hauled the bus and all our stuff across the ...
La Paz, Bolivia georgeharperMake sure to check out Andrea's Travel Blog for more stories and photos of our trip! To the Potosi Mines After our tour of the salt flats in Uyuni, we headed east to Potosi, a silver mining town 6 hours away. As usual, the bus ride took longer than we'd expected. This time, a convoy of 3 busses including ours was stopped on a mountain road next to a long drop blocked by a tractor that had broken down blocking the way. About 50 frustrated passengers watched as a handful of Bolivians carefully ...
Potosi, Bolivia luckyI absolutely love this country, most interesting place we´ve been to since Sumatera. Took an early minibus to a small town by Lake Titicaca, called Copacabana (the brasillian one is named after here.) There was little leg room, but I had a chance to practice my Spanish with a local lass called Veronica. At one point we hopped off the bus and took a boat across the lake, as the boats carrying the buses were´t really up to it! Window gazing was a real treat - up in the mountains at over 3,50...
Copacabana, Bolivia mothmanAfter our 2 weeks in Villa Tunari, we headed back to good old cochabamba for a day before heading to La Paz. As we thought the Colonial Hostal was good value before, we headed back there for a second time. Although this time around the shower was freezing! Theres not really too much to say as we didnt really do much apart from visit an absolutely huge market just to the south of the bus terminal. This place sold EVERYTHING (and I mean everything) musical instruments, overprices MP3 players, f...
Cochabamba, Bolivia, Bolivia stokenmait... were great. We taught them for about 45 minutes each morning at 9.
The first few days were really just a whirl of ´what on earth will happen next´.
Thursday afternoon, Juan came by. He took us to visit a nearby house, but that was quite a fail. We instead decided to ask him what he thought about health in the village. Initially he did not think there were any health problems, but with further questions, we found out lots of things that we ...
... 96 percent alcohol. You have to down the shot after tipping away a bit for god, tio (the devil), pachamama(mother earth), your husband, boyfriends and family... I tried to pour as much away as possible but still had a hefty shot- it warmed me up and helped my breathing, i think...! - although in parts it was so hot, it was hard to breathe...
It was an exhausting experience, we also stopped at teh shrine for god on the way in, and the shrine for the devil on the ...
