Hoorah! Peru!! Home of the potato!!! Birthplace of............. er, Ricky Tosso apparently. I thought that Michael Bentine came from here, but it turns out he was born in Watford(!?). As I write this in my Puno hotel, there is a huge thunderstorm outside, quite spectacular. No photos though. You have to be either really lucky, or really persistent to get a decent photograph of a lightning strike - I´m neither I´m afraid. The bus from Bolivia took around 3.5 hours to get here (it´s a distance ...
Puno, Peru jonnymatthews*********Draft********* Yet another very early start for our marathon flight session: Direct from Iquitos to Lima then another flight from Lima via Cusco to Juliaca. We caught a collectivo to the nearby town of Puno. This busy little town 3800 meters above sea level is a base for acessing Lake Titicaca and the floating islands. We had been well warned about altitude sickness and were unsure of how it would affect us both. We booked into the Colon Inn in the centre of town and availed of the f...

It took me a good half an hour to recover, well we are at 4000metres I suppose.

We got back to shore and back into Hotel Presidente just after 4pm.

We decided to nmove on tomorrow and so we went across the road and booked tomorrows trip to Copacabana for 15 soles each. Puno, Peru casebrownfamily... impressed. Our feet sunk about 2 or 3 inches as we strode about the island, a foot in the wrong place and your shoes and socks were soaked as Jody found out. On our first stop we were given a presentation by Ruben our guide about how these islands were created, maintained and kept afloat. They held a small guessing competition about how deep it was below the island, Jody surpassed himself by winning with a guess of 15 metres and won a small Peruvian necklace. Although it ...
Amantañi, Puno, Peru casebrownfamily... early, a handful of us decide to go on a walk toward the city centre. We fina local cafe and decide to have a java and some dessert - a well earned treat after several days of roughing it!! It is here that the great ´plastic´incident occurs, with Alison finding a smallish sheet of plastic floating in her coffee....leading to a free dessert later that day. The incident (and more appropriately, the unusual reaction of ...
Puno, Peru srossb1971... to find Huey, Duey and Louis, the three 10 yr olds watching WWF. One of them goes to scrabble around in he draw to find our bus ticket and promptly hands it over. Hang on a minute! We´re not f***g stupid, the bus ticket doesn´t even have our name on it, has things scribbled out all over the place and isn´t even for the right date or time. Right lads, refund time! Huey calls someone on the mobile as we stubbornly refuse to move until we have our 50 soles back for the bus ...
Puno, Puno, Peru alberto66Saturday, I took the bus from Cusco to Puno. It was a 7 hour bus ride with plenty of amazing scenery! One pit stop at the ´county line´ between Cusco province and Puno province - Abra La Raya. A great photo op and (of course) plenty of vendors with food, snacks, and handicrafts.

I looked it up and 4,538 meters is 14,232 feet!!! And this isn´t even the highest point in Peru! I love Wikipedia =)<br ...
Puno, Peru lasondra... worry for grandparents!!!!

Before we departed, a man came on board the bus and video taped everyone's faces. The guy next to us said that this is in case of hijacking or an accident; they are able to identify the passengers….. Not exactly reassuring right before taking off on a loooong bus ride at night!

Surprisingly, the seat were very comfortable and even reclined with leg rests. Can’t say ...
Puno, Peru worldtraveler2... where there was an all you can eat buffet for 20 soles. I tucked in in a big way, going back for thirds, getting soup, and even jelly for dessert. This would come back to haunt me the next day. Nicki spotted a poster on the wall of the restaurant advertising a bus to Puno that left at 1.30pm every day. It was currently an hour before this and we thought that if possible it would be great to escape and not have to go back to the noisy home of the gap-toothed retard in Arequipa ...
