Full Moon in the Jungle

At the end of my stay in Sri Lanka, I stayed at Sisira's River Lounge in Kithulgala as heavy rains doused the trees and made the surface of the Kelani River dance and sing. One clear night, however, on the full moon, I went exploring across the river with a local young guide. The humid moonbeams shone through the black jungle vegetation as we listened to the rare Serendib Scops Owl, only recently discovered and described. Bats flew along the trail. The jungle was magical in this setting; you ...

Sri Lanka Here I come

Today, I'm off to Sri Lanka and I will have to take 2 different flights as I have a connection in Chennai. I wanted to get the public transport as taxi to the airport where extortionate, all proportion kept off course. It turned out there was a bus going to airport from the station only 5mins away which was perfect.

The first flight went really well - only 30mins. The connection was slightly more stressful. Indeed, I only had 45 minutes and because I ...

... we had a good time eating our way through several different foods together. Mission accomplished in Colombo...I learned how to eat with my fingers.

I meet up with a friend tomorrow night in Malaysia and we are trying to figure out what to do since 90% of our plans got messed up from all the natural disasters. I think we'll just wing it and see what comes up. That's usually the best way and always leads to some awesome discovery like yesterday in Fujairah.
I explained I had a letter from the Ministry of Education and asked if he wanted to see it. He did, and I started shuffling through my papers in this stifling hot room with no air conditioning. He looked at me and smiled, said, "Madam, please take your time. I have all the time in the world." I really ...

... what we have seen so far, we can definitely recommend a visit to Sri Lanka. The majority of the population is Buddhist (72%) and the second biggest ethnical group are the Tamil (20%). Violence between these groups erupted in the 80s, which led to a long civil war and series of terrorist attacks throughout the country. Since 2000 there is a ceasefire which is still holding, but tensions are still high and some areas in the north are still controlled by the ...

... doodads, or other souvenirs. I guess I collect bathrooms. I took a bus ride to Kandy as the excursion. Originally we were scheduled to ride a restored train up to Kandy and the cost was $285 for each of us. After our epiphany about conspicuous consumption yesterday, we swapped our train tickets in for bus tickets at $85 each. It was exactly the same excursion except that, on the expensive trip, you rode an old fashioned steam train one way. A good thing we ...
