The Thalys to from Koln to Paris
First Thalys Trip Tres Bien! Perfect words to describe the Thalys train and our first trip on the Thalys. I suppose it is a TGV, but it is newer and more special. I was really excited to be on this train, for it is the first time on one of the Trains of Grand Vitesse. This one goes 300 kilometers an hour. From my elementary calculations I think …
On the road again!
Day 9: from the last post, you know I'm sick now. I took a 45 min shower trying to de-gunk. I packed and left my luggage at the hotel. I have a little time before my train so I Head out in search of coffee! It's chilly, overcast and slightly rainy already. I found a little bakery a block or so from the hotel. The kid (19 yrs old maybe) was so …

Day 9 evening: I went to walk around the Dom but the wind almost took my umbrella! I can actually see my breathe. I am taking this as a sign that it's time to get indoors! So, as I was freshening up - Anthony bourdain was doing a show on Koreatown in LA. So, that has Asian on my brain. After a little research - I head to the Great Wall, an …
Smells like Cologne
... when we tried to ask for forks. She understood eventually, I think.
On our way back, we quickly walked through the Angels Market, the oldest in Cologne at Neumarkt. It was surrounded by large trees overhanging it, covered in white stars. I had one last look in the Fairytale Christmas Market at Rudolfplatz Square while Lisa went to the hotel across the street. I didn’t find the marzipan I was looking for, but I did see that McDonald sells bubble tea in ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Hilton Cologne
Good service, but poor quality
I stayed there for two nights 25-27 november 2005.
First of all, the heater was not functionning in the room, we have been given an additionnal heater so as not to die during the night!
The overall quality is poor, this hotel needs some renovation for my point of view. The TV was a very bad quality, all channels were not operating correctly. It is absolutely not worth the price I paid for (160€ per night).
Apart from this, the service is excellent, and the persons working there are really taking care of any of your wishes. That 's a very good point.
I shall recommend you to go to the Maritim or Sofitel in which I have also stayed and found them much better for a lower price.
Just great, from start to finish...!
We have just returned from 2 nights at the Cologne Hilton and I am unable to find any faults whatsoever.
From check-in to check-out the service was superb. The staff were attentive and humoured my school girl German, the rooms were spotless, well appointed, stylish, extremely comfortable and the breakfast is to die for...
The hotel could not be in a better location, minutes from the railway station and the Dom.
Cologne itself is a great place, certainly for the weekend enjoying the Christmas markets(and the gluhwein!)(Try it with Amaretto..delicious.)
The proof of the pudding is if I would return? To this I can answer a resounding yes please, tomorrow !!!!
Just Superb
Faultless - beautiful spacious stylish bedroom and bathroom; service with attention to detail (chocolate-coated fruit kebabs in the room as a welcome and a phone call to the room just after check-in to make sure I was happy and all was in order); a superbly-presented breakfast and just metres from the magnificent Cathedral and the main railway station. I'm a regular in Hilton hotels as a member of the Hhonors programme, but this is easily the best I have experienced in their hotel network to date.
Fantastic Service
This time I upgraded our room, as I was travelling with my husband. We had the deluxe room which was massive. It was situated opposite the hotel elevators which initially worried me, as I thought it would be noisy, but the room had a sort of entrance hall, making the bedroom quite a distance from the door and I was never bothered. The room had an expressio machine, dressing gowns and slippers and two bottles of mineral water as well, per day. The bathroom had a walk in shower as well as a huge bath with another shower, which was handy. It did have the glass brick which I don't like but other than that I couldn't fault it.
I didn't like the hotel's internet access, it had wireless in the rooms, but it cost 9 euros for 2 hours, which were continuous hours, it started as soon as you did, you couldn't break it up for say 4 half hour sessions. I couldn't get it to work, so the receptionist put me in the business suite free of charge, but after that I went to the internet cafe for 2 euros an hour across the street.
Breakfast was FANTASTIC. as before, I love the waffles, I spread them with nutella and cherries, lovely way to start the day!
reception could not help you more if they tried, excellent english they helped me with train times and travel adapters and one even gave my husband a tin of chocolates so he could impress me!
This is one of my favourite hotels. Yes, it is modern rather than homely but it is a friendly, clean, good food, city hotel, that is even better than home from home, as I don't have to clean or wash up. Can't wait to go again!
Service at the lobby bar
I did not stay at the Hilton. My friends and I actually were across the street, but we came in one night for cocktails. At first we went to the Ice bar which seemed nice, but then we went to the lobby bar because a friend had gotten the attention of the staff there. We were attended to by Lars. He was very friendly and pleasant. All four of us enjoyed talking to him. None of us spoke much German, but he kindly disregarded that and engaged us very well in English. Upon our asking, he did try to teach us a few phrases. Unfortunately, the alcohol prevented me from remembering very much. Just wanted to say how enjoyable our evening was and if this was any indication of the rest of the operation, it must be very well run.
Spot on
My husband and I stayed here March 2005 for a Saturday night whilst visiting friends in Cologne. We were very impressed. It does not look particularly special from the outside but the room was excellent, very comfortable bed (and they brought a different type of Hilton pillow if you did not like the continental square style). In the bathroom there was a separate shower cubicle from the bath with a very good power shower. Iron and board provided so did not need to ask.
Its location is great (2 minutes from the cathedral) and we were nervous we would be woken Sunday morning with the bells which never came! The room which was half way along a corridor with no inner door was though incredibly quiet even though the hotel was full.
A tip though - we noticed there were a few rooms on each floor that walked straight onto the landing by the lifts - there is just no way they could have been quiet, so ask for a room away from the lift.
Breakfast was excellent buffet (free to Hilton honours members) but in a huge restaurant and at least 150 people in there on Sunday morning so not serene and relaxing, but what the buffet offered could not be faulted.
We checked in for our return flight from the hotel business centre where the internet connection was very quick (rare in hotels) and there was no charge.
The Hilton rate was very good and we would choose to stay here again over other places in Cologne.
Loved the Hilton Cologne
My husband and I stayed here for a night in July 2004 and loved it! We are HiltonHonors members and were there on a reward stay and were pleasantly surprised that they upgraded us. The room was beautiful with hardwood floors, and modern furnishings. Bathroom was very roomy with a great tub. The hotel was in a great location - just a few minutes from the Dom and the shops and restaurants. The staff were very helpful and attentive. If we ever visit again, we will definitely stay there!
Hilton Cologne- Excellent, friendly service
We stayed for two nights - 17th - 19th December, 2005. Deluxe room rate of EUR 139 - late check out Sunday. Winter rate.
Modern room with King size bed and wooden floors; bathroom with separate shower and bath spacious and very well designed. Room was very clean.
Breakfast was usual Hilton buffet - very courteous service and attention to detail. We ate dinner in the restaurant - the food was well prepared and elegantly presented, not too overpriced.
The hotel is very close to the DOM (4 minutes walk) and the Hautbahnhof (Main railway station). Would stay again if rate was as competitive in the summer months.
Great Service
Although I live in Cologne I sometimes have the opportunity to stay in the hotels here. And the the Hilton is really one of the best in the city for a good price (book via Internet!). It is in the center of the city, the main station, subway and the cathedral are right there. The staff is very friendly and helpfull. The rooms are modern, comfortable and spacious, the typical American Hilton standard. For breakfast you will not miss anything, but when the hotel is full, the buffet is a littel small. The staff making eggs, pancakes e.g. then seems a little overtaxed. A special advice for fish lovers: Every Friday evening there is a special fish buffet for a fixed price. You get sushi, oysters, all kinds of fresh fish, that the fryer is making right for you and much more, all you can eat. You can finish your night at the ice-bar where you get excellent cocktails. If you stay at this hotel you will be satisfied!
Excellent Hotel in a central location
We stayed for Carnival in the Hilton in Cologne and really loved it.
Excellent staff, big and beautiful rooms, large bathrooms, excellent breakfast ... nothing at all to complain about. We will come back for the CSD pride in July.
