... buying, and selling.
We finally pulled into Caribbean Market, and after cruising the aisles with Lionel, I spent $71 on very few groceries, just enough to get me started. Everything is imported here. My eggs were from Pennsylvania, though as I have recently learned, Pennsylvania eggs are cheaper than Haitian eggs, due to a chicken shortage in the country. Now I understand why they give us a Cost of Living Allowance. I’ll be excited to go to a real Haitian march ...
Port-au-Prince, Ouest, Haiti marco... Finally we depart and are due to arrive in Memphis at 6:30 with our next plane leaving at 6:40, from a different terminal! It's going to be close. (Tom thinks it's not going to happen at all.) We land in Memphis only to find there is no available gate. We are stuck on the plane and the time is approaching 6:55. The pilot begins making announcements of different flights that have already departed. Ours is announced ...
Port-au-Prince, Ouest, Haiti larinda... or rice in on the streets contained military records.
We spent a few hours scanning and discussed differents things in broken French and English. Adrien will be arranging the transportation of documents to the embassy for me so I can scan them on the copibook.
By last night I was tired and stayed in my room all night. There was some rowdy bingo going down at the hotel until 12:30am.
Today I finally got to venture out on the ...
... Goave, Leogane, and to Port Au Prince. We arrived in Port Au Prince and went around the city a different way. We saw several more UN vehicles and then we drove by the port. There were many guard towers and men with guns on lookout. The traffic was slow but not nearly as bad when we were trying to get out of the city. We drove by City Soleil which is one of the worst slums in Port Au Prince. I have never seen anything like it ...
Port Au Prince, Haiti asiankrizzos... about how many trees were destroyed? Why did we want to know about the damaged school? We were admonished by an elderly man for not bringing food. One woman, despite her child's hunger seemed to understand that we could help, just not with food. She escorted us to her small community 1km from Cabaret. Most people are afraid to be in their homes after dark, and a single drop of rain makes the situation worse. In Cabaret, the water came through at ...
Port-au-Prince, Haiti hancocjb... again. Kim and I take showers at the convent. The water feels good but has a strange odor to it. I think this may be a psychologial thing since Ashley told me about all the little things she saw floating in it while she worked on the plumbing. For dinner we have turkey, onions, and vegetables. All the food smells the same because it is cooked in the same oil. The smell of this oil is burned into my senses. There is ...
St. Pierre, Haiti larindaa week in PAP -- very depressing -- poorer and more destroyed than Addis Ababa (where I lived for 5 years). GREAT Restaurants (Chex Albert) -- but can only go out when one has a bodyguard. Houses in the residential areas very surpeising -- small lot, big house -- almost no garden -- and the trees have all been cut down everywhere.
Port au prince, Haiti bosleyjohn... and intentionality of my actions. I now know that those of us who entered into religious life have been moved by different motivations - and that those of us who decided to stay are moved by similar motivations. I entered into the Oblate Congregation because I dreamed of a different church. Today I am in religious life mainly because of God's immense grace, because I feel called by Jesus to live according to his Spirit as a Missionary Oblate of ...
