Bienvenue en Haiti!

... buying, and selling.

We finally pulled into Caribbean Market, and after cruising the aisles with Lionel, I spent $71 on very few groceries, just enough to get me started. Everything is imported here. My eggs were from Pennsylvania, though as I have recently learned, Pennsylvania eggs are cheaper than Haitian eggs, due to a chicken shortage in the country. Now I understand why they give us a Cost of Living Allowance. I’ll be excited to go to a real Haitian march ...

The Journey to St. Pierre...

... in Haiti, seems to go very slowly. The noise is not pleasant by any means. Somehow Chris manages to sleep through the process although it's taking place right outside her window. (I nickname her "the rock" because she can fall asleep in a minute and nothing wakes her.) After the carnage, I head off to bed. Thankfully I missed the dishing out of the blood meat the Haitians cooked up! I'll stick with plantains thank you very much!
Amazing!!!

... Goave, Leogane, and to Port Au Prince. We arrived in Port Au Prince and went around the city a different way. We saw several more UN vehicles and then we drove by the port. There were many guard towers and men with guns on lookout. The traffic was slow but not nearly as bad when we were trying to get out of the city. We drove by City Soleil which is one of the worst slums in Port Au Prince. I have never seen anything like it ...

Je mange beaucoup du pain (vraiiii pain) et du riz. J'aime bien les pâtés (pain leger avec viande dedans) et les bananes sèches. Home we go!

... off first, he's earned it. I finally am home. The boys made me a Welcome Home/Happy Birthday sign which is hanging on the door. It says I am "Maid of Monsters". How appropriate! Inside flowers line the stairs. Nate is groggily awake waiting for me. I slip into bed without taking a shower. Sorry Ben, I promised to change them the next day! Travel Tip: American Airlines are not the friendly sky.

... again. Kim and I take showers at the convent. The water feels good but has a strange odor to it. I think this may be a psychologial thing since Ashley told me about all the little things she saw floating in it while she worked on the plumbing. For dinner we have turkey, onions, and vegetables. All the food smells the same because it is cooked in the same oil. The smell of this oil is burned into my senses. There is ...

port au prince

a week in PAP -- very depressing -- poorer and more destroyed than Addis Ababa (where I lived for 5 years). GREAT Restaurants (Chex Albert) -- but can only go out when one has a bodyguard. Houses in the residential areas very surpeising -- small lot, big house -- almost no garden -- and the trees have all been cut down everywhere.

... and intentionality of my actions. I now know that those of us who entered into religious life have been moved by different motivations - and that those of us who decided to stay are moved by similar motivations. I entered into the Oblate Congregation because I dreamed of a different church. Today I am in religious life mainly because of God's immense grace, because I feel called by Jesus to live according to his Spirit as a Missionary Oblate of ...
