Visit to la Zona Colonial

Hello all! I am feeling a little guilty for not having posted anything in such a long time...but since work has started it has been extremely busy...much busier than I was anticipating! Anyway, I do finally have a few minutes now to start updating..

At the end of August, Ian came for a visit, which was great! I rented a car and drove to Punta Cana to pick him up, which is certainly not your relaxing Sunday-drive type of trip. Although it's only 2.5 hours away, the journey has lots of b...

JUGAR PARA VIVIR: YOUTH SPORTS CAMP: I was able to take two kids to the youth sports camp that was over the last weekend in August. After going to three other conferences/camps this summer I was a little burnt out, but this one ended up being my favorite. I don’t ...

The end

... less to give and as the unemployment rate goes up, more people are relying on social services that operate using donations. Well, I think that's all for this blog. Thanks for joining me on my Dominican adventure and sharing your comments throughout my two months there. I'm so happy so many people have enjoyed following along with me. I feel like at times I had a tendency to report on the negatives, but I just want to reinforce that for every gripe you read ...

... tents and kiosks on both sides, people walking and people lining the sides. I looked and looked in this area, but couldn't find anyone. I tried to call someone, but my phone wasn't working. I began to feel uneasy, as I had no idea how to find anyone, and everyone had the same colour shirt on (except me). Finally, I went to one of the kiosks and asked for help, and they told me that because VIVA cell phone company was sponsoring the event, they ...

1st Day in Santo Domingo - Project El Piño

... in this project. We change the room and there are all employees of this office. 2 kids are there and they sing for us some songs and play guitar. They give us some snacks and cold (!!!) water! (the most important thing...it's soo hot)... So all employees (also we) introduce themselves and say what they're doing. From the office we start with our trip through the project. All the familys which are a part of the project live distraught. In the slums there are ...

... has vehicles and we are relying on manpower, mules, etc. I also finally ordered my stove pieces from the artesan who makes them and they should be ready in September. I got to see the workshop where they are made and it is pretty cool. They throw all the pieces by hand on a foot-powered pottery wheel, and then they are dried and fired. I am gearing back up for English classes and youth group after a summer break. I am thinking of changing the ...

What a Difference

... a mothers day dinner and we have been busy fundraising. We actually raised over 100 dollars in 2 days, which amazed me. I mean, dominicans are way more willing to donate money than Americans...and they are poorer than americans!! So we are pretty good on money, but I would still like it if we could raise another 100 dollars. After all, we are plannin on feeding a little over 50 people. So we will need a lot of food. Besides planning ...

Busy week!!

... awful! J But I'm trying, maybe after two years I'll be the dancing queen, but for now, I still just like to sit back and watch. This week, training has been pretty intense. We had our Country Director come to interview us about our future sites, which made us all a little nervous and anxious! Then we gave another Technical Presentation in Spanish in front of our training director, people visiting, all of our Spanish professors, and the nurse! I was so stinking ...

New Years

... friend. I cannot take the music anymore. It annoys me!!! Another think I have yet to comprehend is how people can just start blasting music at 5 or 6 in the morning. Its so loud that it wakes up everybody in the village. Yet the owner of the music doesn´t seem to care or notice that half the town is sleeping! Nobody has any respect for others around them. I guess maybe they don´t intentionally do it, but they could use some common sense and realize that they are waking ...

Dengue part Deux and the Community in a Panic!

... tuesday when I would have to get more tests and x-rays. This however, was not what I wanted to hear. I had things to do that had already been postponed a week and I would have to postpone them another week in Pimentel! But also, our big Camp Glow, a camp to empower girls (i would be taking four girls) was to be held the next weekend and I had to get them informed and their permission slips signed. This of course was MUCH more important than being healthy ...
