'Chill Out' Margarita

... of tourism) and there are 5 star international hotels dotted around the island. There are proper roads, large (and expensive) American style shopping malls, restaurants of every persuasion and numerous duty free liquor stores.

We are staying at a friend’s villa, which has been a delight. We’ve been able to chill out, watch TV, make cups of tea and even do some cooking. We have the use of a car and a driver to show us around, which is very ...

No hacer hablar a la guerra en Isla de Margarita

... this one includes all food and drink up to 11pm – fantastic, my first all inclusive experience whilst backpacking! I even have a hairdryer and a fridge in my room, so it is very luxurious. They don’t speak any English here (but do know a little German), so somehow I am managing to get by on my amazing Spanish skills :s I think my most in-depth conversation has been with Guaco the parrot that sits by reception and can only ...

... scratched CD). He also drove so fast that we needed to hold on to our seats in our sleep. During the day we slept on the floor in the office for the ferry. Those working there took pictures of us. The ferry used to be a major drug-running route and so everyone on-board had to go through a thorough search. They took out everything in our bags, opened and smelled all containers (they took over half an hour with some of the girls' bags), tried ...

Playa Concord or not

... so we shall see if we can stay there. En router we went through the town of Puerto Cruz and were quite happily driving along when we got flagged down by a couple of motorcycle policemen. Once we stopped they told us that we had driven over a bridge that we were not allowed to go over and asked Mike to get out speaking to them. It was then a bit of fun and games, the first thing we asked was where the signs were ...

Farewell Venezuela

... a very helpful conductor. The ease of this last day continued. To get to the airport from the terminal we were told to get a bus to the metro, take the metro to Gato Negro (black cat station) and then get the airport bus. The local bus left almost as soon as we got on it and dropped us by the metro, in a bustling street packed with street vendors and pedestrians. I had the presence of mind to ask a woman (who told us our bags looked heavy!)if there was someone around who ...

More fun in Cumana

As we mentioned we decided to stay here for a bit. Our Spanish has improved muchly but the English is suffering. Apparently people in Cumana speak some of the most difficult to understand Spanish in the world. Very fast, and slur many words so have our work cut out for us. Naim and Oswaldo took us around the city and showed some museums of Sucre (another revolutionary hero here in Venezuela) and we went back to the castle on the mountain (more like a ...

Chilling in Cumana

Hola, We have decided to stay a while in Cumana. The town itself is very pretty with a few specific cool sites in it. The surrounding area is beautiful with beaches and other wonderful things. The reason we are staying is that we have met some super people here. We started asking about a place to learn Spanish. Apparently there is an Institue for English was about 15 meters from our hotel and they suggested we ask there ...

Travel day Puerto Colombia - Caracas - Cumana

Some final thoughts on Puerto Colombia. It really is a beautiful little Colonial town. The colours of the buildings, boats and all surroundings are quite something. The way the town is situated on the ocean coast right at the foot of mountains with beautiful palm trees and white beaches is something that can be dreamt of. The food is what we have learned to accept as Venezuelan. Deep fried pastries for early meal. Great fish for dinner. Very cheep beer all day long. The ...

We left at the first opportunity and ...
