Day 4 - Portland to Nanaimo, BC, Canada

We were up and out of Portland early, under very heavy clouds and it was very cccccccold! Portland, and it's sister city over the Columbia River, Vancouver, WA are beautiful cities and I was sorry that we had to move through them so quickly ... both to make time and to keep warm! We stayed at a beautiful Embassy Suites in downtown Portland, a hotel that had originally been a bank and had REALLY interesting and unique architectural elements ... not that I remembered to take any pictures. Once ...

Day 5 - Nanaimo, BC, Canada

The day "off" the bike (which, of course, it never is) is filled with little chores that go along with the trip ... wash the bike, wash clothes, find a local hangout for lunch, make the mandatory trip to the Honda dealership and the like. We did manage to get the clothes washed and make our deposit at the Honda dealership, though we decided to forego washing the bike this time around since the bugs and dust from the first half of the trip got washed off in the second half. Apparently all thin...

I have a couch lined up in Lisbon through the couch surfing network, (www.couchsurfing.org) which is just about the coolest way to cut your travel expenses in half. I have just one day in Lisbon before I head south to the farm/guesthouse where I'll be volunteering my time for a couple weeks through the ...

All the fun of the fair

... next couple of days, and loads of jewellery and crafts available but as much as I'd love to send everyone back home a collection of gifts, Christmas is still a couple of months away.

So after a while, having side-stepped all the tourists (a collective of which, to my distaste, I still firmly belong for at least another month or so), I called Sue, whose couch I would be surfing the next couple of nights (hi Sue, if you're reading!). Day 4 Telegraph Cove to Nanaimo, BC

... miss the plane. Today I left Telegraph Cove a bitter sweet moment. I love to be there but the whales are no where to be found thus as much as I love it there, it just wasn't right for me. I am very exhausted and really ready to go home. I am going to be getting up exceptionally early to catch the plane and will get home late tomorrow after a stop in seattle and minneapolis. Today I went to ...

The Continuation of the Last Huge Update

... the guys at the poker game. Kent needed some one to remove tones of gravel from his back yard and I happened to be qualified on the banjo and wheelbarrow. That was seriously hard work at nearly 4000 feet above sea level in the desert. But I got it all done and with some extra gas and food money to boot. I came to the conclusion that hand guns really are just very volatile security blankets for people that are full of fear and not much faith. Harsh statement from a ...

Before Sleep

It's 3:30 am, May 10th....today we leave, today this whole thing is real. There are no more sleeps, no more going away dinners, no more last visits before our departure. Today it is us, an airplane and 4000 anticipated miles of travel, I can help but be slightly on edge. There have been great meals, over filled glasses of Australian shiraz, tears and heartfelt goodbyes. Today Italy is the reality.

... Glacier photo The guides were friendly and funny. We walked on the glacier photo. Very impressive for the scientific and curious mind. Had a quick snack before we left the chalet and saved our appetite for lunch in Crossing-Soup and Chilli Buffalo. Our photos of Peyto lake have not been digitally enhanced. The lake really was that bright blue colour photo Bow Lake was also big and beautiful. Along the highway if you see cars pulled over to the side of the road, you'd better slow down ...
