When I told the people at the front desk at my hostel in Zagreb that I was going to Istria they said to avoid the coast and concentrate on the inland hill towns. The coastal towns are nothing compared to those farther south around Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik. They are probably right, but three coastal towns in Istria sounded interesting enough to warrant a stop anyway based on everything I've read.

We stayed in a very nice apartment here and used this as our hub for two days. It was listed as a four star facility and they certainly met our expectations. We arrived with two weeks of dirty laundry and they did for us as part of their services and it came back all folded in our room. ... It is a family owned business of long standing but they built a stunning modern facility with indoor and outdoor tasting facilities with breath-taking views of the rolling country-side. There was only one other party visiting so we felt like wealthy VIP's.
