... pesos for a double room that stank like **** and was on the main road so it was really noisy. We were tired and exasperated and had to walk up the road to park the car securely, on the way back we brought some beers to help ease the pain of the whole drive and the corruption we had endured. We spent the rest of our evening drinking beers and shots of Pox; a seriously strong liqueur from Chapias that James had given Kike. We were drinking shots out of a deodorant lid and ...
... off the tourist map. It's still got a pretty bad rap for violence, but we'd also heard if you stay in the touristy spots it's safe as pie and we had some time before we flew out of Mexico so we decided we would give it a whirl! Acapulco. Once one of the world's most famous and popular resort destinations, the pretty coastal city is now mainly only visited by vacationing Mexican families (and, apparently, us). Acapulco has seen its share of gruesome gang violence in recent years, and as with many other places in the country, there are regular government protests happening in the streets. It is also still picking up the pieces ...
With Semana Santa finished I figured the driving would be smooth from here on out. Funny thing...it turns out most Mexicans get the entire week off following the holy week. Great, looks like another week of crowded destinations. At least the drive to Acapulco was smooth, wide and vacant of traffic....until I was within 30 miles. Flat, wide open, mostly barren terrain with a mountainous horizon suddenly burst into a thriving city-scape, which went up ...
Today we spent the day sailing down the coast of Mexico. From our map, we are off the coast of Acapulco. No port stops today as we are heading to Guatamala, which takes two nights and two days sailing to arrive. The waters are very calm and the sailing very smooth. We are both very relaxed and Johnny is enjoying the variety of foods on board.
