This morning we visited the island of Djerba linked to the mainland by a 7k causeway across a shallow stretch of sea. The island is very low (15m max) & has many scattered houses between what were the oldest olive trees we have ever seen as with most Tunisian dwellings most under construction or semi derelict. The crew went out for dinner the night we arrived, and Chezzy decided to treat himself before he headed back to London. As in his words "we are in smelling distance of the sea" it is therefore considered appropriate to have a cocktail. So Chezzy ...
... couple for two hours to see what we could see. Ed drove the car through the twisting, sharply-turning dirt backroads, which were at times treacherous, not only because the roads were narrow, but because the windy air was filled with sand and dust. The dust that the buggies in front of us stirred up was so thick in places that we could barely see the obstacles ahead.
So that Ed could concentrate ...
Heading south we decided to go to Jerba, as it is renowned for the beaches!
After Mahdia, Jerba was our next stop, apparently the most popular part of Tunisia according to the Lonely Planet. We spent out first night just outside Houmt Souk, the accommodation was OK, except that Petra found a mouse in her rucksack, and just about woke up the whole hotel with her shriek! It was just a small field mouse!!
The island was pleasant, but I must admit, it would be far better ...
