Nicosia, Nicosia, Cyprus fletcka... groves, pine-forested mountains and some of Europe’s cleanest beaches. Cypruse occupies a strategic position as the easternmost island in the Mediterranean and this made it subject to regular invasions by powerful empires. Vestiges of the diverse cultures – Greek, Phoenician, Assyrian, Egyptian, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman and British – that have either ruled or breezed through, dot the island. I was ...

Nicosia, Cyprus dryley... Green Line I found women dressed in Muslim clothing, signs written in Turkish and an entire world oriented towards Istanbul. The Turkish Lira replaces the Euro, and instead of in modern stores, commerce still takes place in tiny mom and pop storefronts. I would walk past a crumbling one story building held up by who knows what, and inside a man would be crafting something with his hands in a darkened room such as a century ago.

Coming around one ...

Their centre is currently full and all they can do is return the strays after the op to nearby where they were collected. We all had a wonderful walk on this beautiful route and this time Smiler managed to stay upright!! To celebrate it was back to Smiler's for a very welcome cup of tea with the better halves.
Kyrenia, Cyprus kyreniarange... journey. Before taking one step there was dissention in the ranks - Compo was convinced we should head off to the south but our intrepid leader Cleggy was adamant that we should go north. Eventually after a "friendly" discussion we headed off north. The first way marker proved our leader to be correct and prompted much ribbing of Compo! The walk took us through some of the best scenery that I ...
Kyrenia, Cyprus kyreniarange... to suck up to the E.U., but we still needed our passports, were granted a visa and had to change our currency. The north side was fantastic. Immediately it seemed more relaxed and friendlier. And of course there was a more Muslim feel...the largest Christian church had even had its crosses hacked off and now operated as a mosque. We wandered around the beautiful town and just felt so at ease. We sat in some beautiful cafes and had a fantastic meal, topped off ...

I now needed to pick up the bike and this time I searched for the bus station. I had a detailed map from the tourist office, but did it show where the bus station was? No. I asked the people at the bus stops who were very helpful indeed. Even when the bus did run, it just go caught in the endless ...
Limasol, Cyprus jnewcomb... always looking for something different, and this was different. Time was running short so I packed it in and headed back to Nicosia, walking back across the Green Line. "Have a nice time?" The Turkish guard asked. "I had a great time." I answered before the guard looked over to see the UN waving me on. As I walked back into the south I turned to the left, over the high stone venetian walls and could see a handful of people staring down, apparently at nothing, as I was the ...
