... woken by the alien like cries of the foxes, but we didn't even stir. We wish we had seen the little creatures that had ran off with the melon from our dinner the night before.

After breakfast we drove the couple of hours back to Bawiti with a short stop to have a bath at another spring. We had a couple of last hours to enjoy the peaceful oasis before we had to take the 6 hour bus back to Cairo.

We are truly liking Egypt once more.

Nothing but Desert!

We left our rather large bags behind in Cairo and made our way to the station where a bus awaited us to take us to Bahariya Oasis.
The bus took us through some amazing desert scenery, mind you most of the time we were made to keep the curtains shut to try and keep the air conditioning going as much as possible.
Arriving in Bawiti we got swamped with safari touts (we new this was going to happen, so we came prepared, we already new were we wanted to ...

... an swimming pool. Of course Daryl stripped down to his boxers and had a swim. We ate lunch then got back on the road. We stopped just a while after that at a fork in the road. Tito was waiting. We said goodbye to Bluto and hopped into Tito's car for the ride back to Cairo. A note about the driving here. It is insane. It is the chaos of Vietnam with the speed of the autobahn. There were a few times here that ...

... we needed to get back in time to go pick up Daryl from school. We got to his school out in New Cairo City (a strange place with lots of money and tons of new, weirdly grand construction.) We toured his school and he introduced us to some of his teachers. We said goodbye to Morgan and hopped into the back of Tito's car (Tito is not his real name - Daryl has a ...

Black and White

Last night, I was out to dinner on a Nile cruise with my Egyptian friend and his family. We dined on exquisite food, marveled at the whirling dervish, ogled the belly dancer's every undulation, and still managed to watch the Cairo city-lights as we drifted by. In between the intense thumping of the Arabic percussion sets, we discussed the importance of education that offers an international perspective, encourages language learning, and promotes multi-cultural ...

... the bus and started walking towards the center of town. When Alon and I get to a new place and we know we'll spend more than one night, we like to scope out our hotel options before making a decision. Being me, I have my paper and pen handy to right down prices and amenities for comparing. Also, as is necessary in Egypt, we are alert for any commission goers that want to follow us around. After a little while we found a quiet hotel set a ways behind ...

... includes Bawiti Oasis and then onto the Black and White Deserts by 4WD. The camels can have a rest thank you very much. Camels are just popping up everywhere these days. After staying one night at the African House Hotel in a better room with mosquito screens we took off the very next day to the desert on a local bus heading to Bawiti Oasis, five hours drive from Cairo. Recently a great discovery was made there. Hundreds of ancient mummies were uncovered, most adorned ...

Some of the older people on our trip in were sitting in the back and felt that he needed to slow down, and after shouting at him twice and nearly causing a diplomatic incident, Moustafa obliged and promised not to go over 80 km/hr. We spent the next 8 hours speeding through the desert, sometimes on nice roads, othertimes zipping off the road all together to flail around in the sand before ever so ...

... and meeting our next driver Imun, we were in line for the seven car convoy at 8am. The Egyptian government is attempting to improve the road, but it is a constant battle against the elements. Image trying to build a fixed structure- road, on a moving surface- sand. The trip was bumpy the entire way, but somehow it didn't drag on as long as the earlier drives, more entertaining perhaps? I was taking a video to demostrate how rough the ride actually was ...
