We are fed up with Nairobi's madness. We thought to find peace in the train, which was jeeeez cancelled due to a strike. We had a grudge on them that we couldnt experience it. But then I cought myself - I cannot be so egoistic. I come and go, and these people should be payed by this bloody corrupted government. Can you imagine, up to now the MPs did not pay taxes for heir veeeeery large income. And people still have a hope in them, even though this 50 years of independence ...
Kilifi, Kenya shoeinmissin... that i'd come back...that was the start of the tears, then all of the kids came up to say goodbye and there were tears all over the place. I couldn't face going back inside to the other volunteers that were staying, I just had to sit outside for a bit. All of the children were just looking out of their windows, so I made myself go in so they would settle. My last night under the mosquito net...in what now very much felt like home.
Kilifi, Kenya vjgemini... Vision), it doesn't spoil them in the long run. I guess I'm just a bit worried that the magic will be lost...the magic being the childrens genuine happiness. It's been exam time at school, so I've been spending most days just sat in the classroom making sure that there is no cheating going on. I feel like an proud mother, excited waiting to see how they all get on! Got to wait a couple more days though ...
Kilifi, Kenya vjgemini... They loved it and got very competitive when it came to judging them! It's brightened the classroom a bit too. But the highlight has to be our little trip out...... Mwasaha heard that a dead whale had been washed up on a local beach. So, after school we all, and I mean all 20+ of us piled into their little "matatu" (mini-bus for about 10 people!) to go and ...
Kilifi, Kenya vjgemini... and so well behaved it's incredible. Introduced them to video today...this was the first video I took of them, when they hadn't quite grasped the idea and were still saying "cheese" thinking it was a picture. I've booked to go on a Safari in Tsavo East this weekend - really looking forward to it. Take care xxx
Kilifi, Kenya vjgemini... a paragraph in a text book and this was supposed tobe the basis of a one hour lesson...don't know how but I managed to do it and as a result have ended up with the job of teaching them English every day on my own. Have really enjoyed it though and the kids seemt o be liking it too. A day in the life of....normally starts with brekkie at about 0730, which is bread and tea. Then over to the ...
Kilifi, Kenya, Kenya vjgemini... game, a lone giraffe walking gracefully over the plains toward our truck, they truly are stunning animals. We saw countless elephants, from adults with huge tusks that touched the ground to small babies being protected by their mothers. We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to watch a herd of elephants bath in a water hole. The lodge we stayed in was stunning, all rooms had balconies that looked out over the game reserve and a ...
Mombasa, Kenya antandrel... has disappeared and I am no longer sun burnt. My beard is now gone, I have cornrows (braids) and I'm back to travelling solo. 10 more days on the coast and then I'll be heading inland - where it will hopefully be cooler, less touristy and more African. Merry Xmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy New Year and Happy Days to everyone (please pass this message on to everyone you know - who knows me). Wishing you a sweet, prosperous new year, with all your hopes and dreams coming true. Love David
Kilifi, Kenya dcm... in Mombassa tried to sell me a 'giza' which is the size of three 'kilos'. It costs KSh 300 (about $4). They say "when you chew Miraa, you'll make many plans" Aggressive behavior, nightmares and hallucinations are common side effects, as well as reduced appetite, constipation and brown teeth. Even less pleasant are claims of Miraa causing spermatorhea, an abnormal leakage of sperm (not from a wet dream), which then leads to infertility. While ...
Mombassa, Kenya dcm... back and joyous mood that permeates the streets. I slept in a got around slowly because I was worn out in general from 60 days of voyaging. Eventually we set out to explore Old Town and Fort Jesus, the two "attractions" of the city. In order to get there we had to take Matatus, independent vans that serve as the cheapest public transportation system in Mombasa. They ended up being my favorite part of Kenya. Imagine a full-passenger van packed with people. All the ...
