Getting to Koycegiz was a bit of a logistical nightmare, (I think from Selcuk - it was three buses!!) but I got there in the end. I stayed in a guesthouse that was recommended to me from the guys I stayed with in Selcuk and it paled in comparision - but possibly because I was only one of two people staying there. The owner was a slightly strange man and he had an 'assistant' who can only be ...
Koycegiz, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey travellingjenI was really overdue my holidays, finally getting to take it in October and I just signed up to two weeks of not doing much in Turkey with a couple of friends in a group. For me though not doing much isn't my cup of tea so I took every chance to re-live my old Turkey memories, from food, sights, sea, dancing and ahem, yes the men, again :)
Please come back soon as I update all the stories from the two weeks. Thanks.
... There have been quite a few places I have been and been grateful for the big and small things I am used to - whether it be a well prepared meal, a western style toilet or even just people able to speak English. I think the problem starts when an area actively TRIES to be a tourist haven.
In this case the local shops all stop trying to be pleasant shops of whatever culture or vibe they might normally choose, but instead try ...
Awoke near Pamukkale and paid a scandalous amount to get in. 10 pounds each to see some tepid pools of water. Even the initially striking karstic rock was pretty much covered in faint brown footprints. The extorsion didn't end there as it turned out that Cleopatra's Baths, the hot spring at the top was an additional cost. We thought we could get away with just paying for one of us to get in and then swapping the ...
Marmaris, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey davechrisdamo... as the last part of our tour. Our sweet tour guide explained to us that Turkish hospitality would dictate that they brought out Tea for everyone, but that we were not being pressured to buy. He also explained how the very word "hospitality" comes from a time when Zeus visited an Anatolian family as a human and was very very impressed by the nice and pleasant treatment he received. The word "hospitality" comes from the names of that family. As nice as that ...
Koycegiz, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey jimmyandkristen... up from Kas to the concrete plant, and beyond, perhaps. I just had to keep descending cautiously, and not rush it.
Once down to the road I set my day pack off, took my bush hat off and combed my scant hair.
Then a pickup truck appeared, carrying two homeward bound concrete plant workers, and they stopped and gave me a ride back down to the bottom, where the Lycian Way met the coastal highway above Kas, the exact spot I began this outing.
... and clean and well appointed. Looking out their fifth floor window, Savas looks down upon Ottoman period houses in the neighborhood in which he spent his childhood. That is, across the road. Where the apartment is, it is a new city.
I spent most of that first day just in the apartment on my computer. Savas spent much of his afternoon in a university engineering class. Meryem did whatever Meryem does on a day when she does not have to go to work. In the evening ...
... be chartered for 1 or 2 weeks for itineraries cruising the South Aegean. The 'house party' style atmosphere onboard is very informal and guests are made to feel at home. We offer free use of a canoe, plus snorkeling and windsurfing equipment. You are also welcome to fish off the side of the boat. The Şenkaya can go under sail whenever conditions permit or use the engine when required. The maximum cruising speed is 10-11 knots. The guest ...
