... as we had purchased a tour. The tour was called "Cultural Highlights of Samana."

The documents warned of a long tender ride, pollution and poverty. I didn't think the tender was that long, taking only about 15 minutes. The other two were dead on. When we got off the tender on to the Samana dock the pollution stared us in the face. The water in the bay is filthy. There is no other word to describe it. Having fled the hospital for a few days, I joined up with US Peace Corps for their Fourth of July celebrations up in Samana. I was instructed by my friend Yvette to approach any white person on the bus and they surely would be heading up for the same party. After many awkward stares and glances, I wandered over to them and it turns out she was right.
