A Surprise Visit

... seen anything like that - and then gave him a round of applause when his head (safely) broke the surface. I was a little indignant that I did not get the same reaction going off of the 6-foot rope swing.

After goodbyes all around, we headed back to town to watch the amazing sunset from our terrace, batido in hand. Batidos are milkshakes made with fresh fruit - in this case, papaya - and they're the perfect antidote to a steamy tropical evening.

Fancy-Pants on the Cheap

... stoop in the evenings. Once the sun sets, it's all about watching people go by. On our walk, many of the homes were lit by kerosene lanterns. Electricity is very unreliable here, so we weren't sure if the power was out in those homes, or if they have some sort of rationing system. Many of the kerosene-lit homes clearly had electricity (fridges and TV's, for example) but were also set up to function without it.

Happy Easter!

... be a little slower than normal just because of the holidays, but, in general, my projects are doing well. My current projects consister of: 1) Teaching English classes to adults and those classes are very fun two nights a week. 2) The Escojo group, a health/family planning group for youth, is moving along. I am interested in seeing what kinds of projects we get into next. The students ...

First trip to the beach - Samaná Peninsula

... all sensitive to motion sickness. We saw a pair of whales spout & dive several times, so that was neat. Saturday night was so much fun for me because we found some live music at a bar that was playing merengue and bachata. I got to do a lot of dancing, including one song with the ensemble's lead singer...who was highly impressed by my bachata skills. Not so cool were the several pairings of old ...

Happy Thanksgiving!

... food cooked in a shorter period of time. Other benefits are that it will improve health of the family as it has a chimney to direct the smoke upward, requires less fuel which saves the family time and money, and reduces deforestation in the community. This stove is designed to help improve the lives of families who cook on open flame fire between three rocks. In my rural community, many use this cook method or have reverted back ...

The COS conference

If I didn´t feel like my Peace Corps service was coming to an end officially, well, that was before I attended the COS (close of service) conference two weeks ago. We began as a group of 51 back in September of 2005 when we met up in Miami, a bit scared, excited, and sad all at the same time, to embark on our new adventure as future Peace Corps volunteers. We all had the same questions...¨What will it be like?¨ ¨Is it safe?¨ ¨Will I love it?¨ ¨Will I ...

Long story short, I woke up the next morning and couldn't find my cell phone (and that long story probably has a little to do with the Dominican rum I was drinking the night before:)). I looked everywhere and ...

Going off to my site.......

... a book and every time someone thought I was studying. They do not know that you can read a book for fun or for knowledge. This may also be due to that they do not have any books. I have thought that this might be a secondary project for my community which would be a library. Well, I loved my room, meaning that when it rained there were holes above my bed (I am sure you know what happened). Well, I will be in my place and have some control over these ...
