... up the nets are made using no tools at all. Real salt of the earth farmers. Artisans. After a refreshing glass of homemade lemonade we went inside and met Benedetto, the master cheese maker. We watched him produce 3 different types of cheese from milk he had collected this morning. Doesn't get fresher than that. He made ricotta, fiore de latte (mozzerella) and caciottine. He also produces a cheese unique to the Sorrentine Peninsula called Provolone del Monaco. ...

We decided to make a change of scenery today. Instead of fighting the crowds and crazy hour long bus ride to Amalfi, we voted to hop on the train for Pompeii and fight the crowds there! It blows our minds that this city was frozen in time by a volcanic eruption by Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Pompeii offers the best look anywhere at what life in Rome must have been like 2,000 years ago. ... We walked 1,000 steps from the Porto to the train, back to S.Agnello where I grabbed a doppio and chatted to the cafe owner. We caught up with everyone on the terrace over lots of drinks and conversations about our homeland idiosyncrasies and enjoyed cheap pasta/pizza at Ciao Toto in the centre piazza late in the evening. ... cliff. My favorite type of business, mixed!! Lotto, bus tickets, Pizza, Liquor and cigarettes. The locals sit out the front and laugh at the terrified tourists as they get off the Amalfi to Positano bus.

Our legs can barely move as we have turned into two grumpy old walkers. The 3 stairs to our room are like a mountain. But we will go on. All the cafes and restaurants are up hill and these need our support.

That night I really didn’t want to go out since the vibe I got was that Naples isn’t too safe. I stayed indoors along with everybody else at the hostel. We all chilled out in the lounge area and watched the Gladiator.
