Harwich and boarding the Westerdam

We headed immediately to the hotel to get checked in. After lunch at the hotel's pub, we walked along the coast up towards the lighthouse and port area of the town. The town was famous for the old Naval shipyard where many vessels were built from 1660 to 1827. The facility is now used by a private company. There is a redoubt that was built to protect the port from Napoleon's forces in 1808. The redoubt has been restored with some of its armament and it is open to visitors. It is a classic ex...

Two days before departure

Spent the day organising and packing with the help of sister Ruth.

Mike at recording studios, Chrissie at work!

Mike and Lucie arrive with Flopsie the rabbit, and the dogs needed to be fed urgently, just in case they thought Flopsie had been brought home for their dinner!

I'll be able to sleep well tonight knowing that the bulk of the work has been done, more than one day before we travel!!!

Early Start

4am starts are never fun. Last time we caught the North Sea ferry, we had a night boat with a compulsory purchase order on cabins. The maximum berth was four, so we had to get two cabins, which turned out to be several miles apart. That's fine if you have two adults, but not really an option when you are travelling alone with four children. Consequently, I booked the day boat and an early start.

We put the kids to bed at 8pm and followed ourselves a few minutes later. I did ...

Last leg ends in a bang...and a crash!

... s bike laying on its side on the sidewalk. I turned around as fast as possible and rode back to where the bike was laying. Connie was laying in a fetal position on the other side of the fence which was pushed down on top of her by part of the bike. One of the road crew helped me get the bike off her and stand it up on the sidewalk. Connie was awake, but was in distress and wanted to get her helmet off and turn over, which I didn't want to do ...
