Maureen and I are embarking on a journey across the United States from St. Petersburg Florida to California. We have both dreamed about this trip for over 35 years, it's finally happening! We are staying in homes owned by current and former teachers whom we contacted through the Educators ...

While we only had a few hours, and it was dark, they gave us a thorough and informative driving tour, including a tour of the Duke campus which was fun. The next day, we hit the road to Virginia for a quick visit, and then the home stretch -- 7 hours further north arriving in NJ around 10 PM on Dec. 22.

We hit the beach traffic and it took us an hour and a half to get from Clearwater to Clearwater Beach. Our hotel, the Sea Captain, is a small kinda family run spot which was very easy to find and the people are very friendly. Everything is within walking distance. ...
... it was an inch!) rattlesnake. It was probably 12 inches around and slithered across the ground in a very imposing fashion. All of us trying to make our way to the beach let the snake have right of way before we started out again. Best to have a healthy respect for these critters. Needless to say, we walked with our eyes on our feet for the rest of our stay on Caladesi Island.
