Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India sushilojha... 3.5 km long cemented road with more than 3200 steps ( total 3600 steps up to temple ) Entered main Jain temple and sat by the side of Mahendra Jain who was already sitting there praying God Adinath by reciting holy book Mantras. He said that he would come back only after main prayer in the temple by about 10 am. I ...
Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India sushilojha... to do in Rishikesh that we wished we had. We didn't take any yoga classes and we didn't stay in an ashram (Sorry Grego!), but on the last day we made a serious effort to go and see the evening river prayer ceremony that occurs in Swarg Ashram every day. We thought we had found it, but it turned out to be just a regular bathing ghat (stone staircase leading into the river), and we hung out there for half an hour waiting for it to start. You can buy offerings at these ghats ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India mattarah... where I didn't have plans to go to some delicious restaraunt or other (yes, this is related to my svadistana chakra, the energy center that most of us are stuck in whereby we center our lives on obtaining pleasure...pleasure from food, drink, shopping, sex) or when there wouldn't be a birthday party at school with cupcakes or cookies. Who could give these up for 10 days? However, it did seem possible while living in Rishikesh (I think I mentioned a few times already ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India courtenay... he did his sadhanna here from 1924-34.) The Kutir opens from 9-11 a.m. and then again from 3-5:30 p.m. for anyone to drop in and meditate. Silence is requested and kept. I leave at 4:10 pm, walk back across the bridge, catch a rickshaw up the hill to the "High Banks" hotels in order to make it to afternoon yoga from 5-6:30 pm. I am a pretty ridiculous spectacle on a yoga mat for the 1st time in my life at age 62 and over 200 lbs, but the young yoga instructor ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India globalgramma... far I eventually went for it and spliced the water at over 200 km an hour. God it was a good feeling! But then again doing anything as completely stupid and wreckless as this, is bound to give you a rush. I remember saying to myself "after this you need never be afraid of anything ever again....". Well apart from drowning that is! It was an incredibly fun afternoon and despite the umpteen hours spend drinking in the diverse culture of India, I know that this will be one of my ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India kealderra... each side. It's quite massive, and quite lovely. This place exudes relaxation, the perfect place to come after the hectic schedule i'd been keeping. It's a very spiritual place, home to yoga and meditation courses galore. In the evening I sat on the garden infront of the hostel, and watched the sunset over the Ganges. The priests with their vibrant clothes washed, prayed and meditated on the beaches across the river, the evening light catching their robes ...
Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India jonnytheroth... the base of the stupa I saw a groundskeeper screaming at people to place their shoes in the locker before entering. This was proving by far to be the most uptight Buddhist establishment I had ever visited. This was the first stupa I had seen that was large enough for people to enter and I walked inside viewing the many shrine rooms and colorful artwork blanketing the walls. There were several stories within the structure and each floor exhibited a ...
Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India jonathanfoster... off the beaten path. We saw a few monkeys in the trees. They have tan colored fur and shake branches at you. Back at the hotel, we invited all the directors of institutes we would work with to a dinner party. There was lots of alcohol because Eaton thought they would drink, but none of them did (probably because Hindus don't drink alcohol). Most of us had a few drinks and danced to some Indian and American music, and had a blast.
Dehradun, India adomingo4... this city) took our map and pen and drew one line saying “there is the river – you should go by it”. “But we don’t have this road in our map!” (it was good map, and the absence of road didn’t mean anything good”. “Oh, it’s new road, you can do not have in the map. It’s the good road. The same like this”. Ha, some shadow of good road may be was… first 20 km. But ...
