Historical Traveler Reviews of Clarion Hotel Suites Downtown Montreal

Great location - close to all shopping and the subway

from anti-stress
Very comfortable rooms, with decent service, and clenliness. Best part was the location - easy for shopping, and getting around Montreal city. 2 subway stations were closeby - easy access to everything. We were able to get around and do plenty of sightseeing from this location. We could not/ did not want to drive everywhere. So this was perfect. We left the car parked in their paid garage, and did not take it out until it was time to leave.

Not great!

from nkessell
We had a one bedroom suite and it was tiny, you could hardly turn around in the bathroom, no equipment in the kitchen, very hard bed, massive holes in blankets (approx 5" wide) and really noisy heating system that meant you couldnt use it at night, so in mid feb thats not good! The sofa bed was very poor with very thin mattress and sloped at all angles. Not impressed, but hey it was cheap!

Good value, acceptable hotel

from TA223344
I got a good rate for this hotel so I took it. The hotel is an old building with a tiny lobby, looks like it was converted from an apartment building.

The room I got ("junior suite" in an upper floor) was clean, with a nice view of mont royal and a big window that could be opened, and a separate sitting area and bedroom area.

However the suite was small, the bed blocked the cupboard which became almost unaccessible.

The kitchen was also very small and not very well equipped. I found a note there that warned the guests that the kitchen has to be spotless clean upon check-out otherwise they will charge extra for cleaning it! I didn't want to test if they are

serious about that, so I did clean the kitchen thoroughly, even had to buy extra cleaning materials to do the job properly! not the most exciting holiday activity...

The location is OK, a quiet neighborhood with all kinds of stores nearby, but a little west of the main tourist areas, you'll have to walk 1-2 km or take the metro. The staff was attentive and professional. Overall, it was not too bad considering the price.

Service was good but a lot left to be desired

from cruisingonceagain
This was rated as a three star by Triple A and I really think it should be a two star hotel. The neighborhood is not so great and parking was an issue. They cannot accomodate all their guests and they directed us to a parking lot about three blocks from the hotel. We did not mind this too much since the weather was nice. This hotel is a renovated old apartment building and it shows. We had the smallest room with a queen sized bed, tiny kitchen (two in the kitchen was quite crowded) and a bathroom. The ceiling tile in our bathroom kept lifting when we took showers! Coffee was free but you had to request it everyday. We had requested extra towels, and everyday, they took away the extra towels and we had to ask for them each day. They were prompt, though, in responding to requests. The hotel is about a 20 minute walk to the main tourist area of St. Catherine. There are shops and a grocery store near the hotel so this makes it convenient. I would not stay here again and I have stayed in better three star rated hotels.

Good rates, okay location...

This isn't the best hotel in Montreal, but it serves a purpose. A bit run down, and very cold in the middle of winter. The kitchenette is nice, but not a lot of cutlery, or serving utensils in the drawers. The rates are good for what you get. It is a bit of a walk from shopping, and restaurants, and a moderate taxi ride from the Bell Centre. So don't stay there in the middle of winter!! I probably won't stay there again, but it is a good affordable option.

Excellent Hotel - Central Location

We typically visit Montreal once a year and have stayed at a number of downtown hotels over those visits. The Clarion was an excellent hotel - the rooms were lovely and the location was perfect. We walked to the shops and restaurants and even to the hockey game. We higly recommend this hotel. Even the staff was wonderful.

Not bad, stayed at better

The hotel itself was nice but there was a language barrier at check in.

Upon checkout we were charged for movies we did not rent and had quite a time removing the charges. Parking is also a problem and an exta expense.

Problems, but they were taken care of

This is the second time I've stayed at the hotel and while there were a few problems the hotel was able to correct them.

Parking cannot be prebooked, we got to the hotel after the parking was full. We were given a map to another lot, about 3 blocks away which was cheaper (only $7 per 24 hours with in and out privledges) Which saved us $27 from parking at the hotel.

For the price, the location can't be beat, one block north of Cathrine (the main shopping street), about 7 blocks to Cresent (the main tourist party street) and the Art Gallery, 2-3 blocks to the subway which will take you all over the city.

July 2003

We stayed here for three nights June early July,2003. We had a Junior suite 4 floors up. The suite was OK , and had all the facilities needed for self catering.

We found the area to be very noisey at night and this did disturb our sleep, it may be different if on a higher floor.

The location is not great, it is in walking distance of the shopping areas , but allow 20mins to half hour. The nearest subway is 5 - 10 mins walk and this can be used to access the port area.

Not the greatest choice , but if you can get a good deal - worth giving a go.

Great location, great price

We have stayed at the Clarion at least four times. My husband and i find the staff friendly and informative. The rooms are decidedly so-so, however, the oppurtunity to use the little kitchen to make a tea or keep your fruit in the fridge is great. For the price, you can't beat it. The location is super, within very close walking distance to Rue St. Catherine. We will be going again at the end of this month, and plan to stay there.
