... a few months, years ago. We enjoyed a coffee and she gave us both a beautiful gift from Ireland. A necklace with a Celtic cross. Such an awesome present.

We then went out for dinner with our group at a local restaurant where Mikey tried the pea and lettuce soup. Not so nice. Afterwards we had a few drinks with the Longreach girls afterwards at our local Irish pub.

Another great day in a beautiful country.

First night in Dublin, and all is well

... Queen Elizabeth I, to provide a Protestant way of thinking. It is now Ireland’s most prestigious college. The campus was absolutely beautiful, and I enjoyed thinking what it would have been like to attend this private campus.

I crossed the O’Connell Bridge and after using the bathroom at Burger King, I used my trusty dandy Rick Steves’ travel guide to take his O’Connell Street self-guided tour. The O’Connell Street ...

... leant a lot.

Then it was on to the Giant's Causeway, passing through some loyalist villages (we could tell from all the Union Jacks on display) along the way. The causeway is very impressive, I liked it a lot. We also walked over a very narrow swing bridge to a tiny island. I would have liked to stay in the area for a few days, but when you don't have time, you don't have time. So it was off to Ballintoy where we spent the night (most of it in the ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Clarion Hotel Dublin Airport

    Poor reviews unjustified

I stayed one night at this hotel, and chose it for it's proximity to the airport because I was arriving on a late flight.

We stayed at the Clarion on the night of 26 March simply because we had a very early flight to catch the next day. We arrived at 9pm to a lowish rise red brick building clad in purple hoarding: apparently the hotel was undergoing refurbishment. The hotel's website contained no warning that the hotel was being refurbished which was irritating and for which the check-in staff made no excuses. We did not expect great things from the Clarion as (a) it was fairly cheap for pricey Dublin and (b) we had read some of the other Tripadvisor reviews before booking. However, to say that any of our low expectations were met would be an overstatement. The hotel is woeful and depressing. To summarise the negatives: our room was very small, the en suite bathroom was too small, the cushions on the bed and the bed throw had disgusting stains on them, noise travels very easily in the hotel, the bed had a very saggy mattress, the check-in staff were patronising, there is nowhere in the hotel to buy a small snack (e.g. crisps or a chocolate bar) - staff told me I would have to go to the petrol station across the road, there is no lift whcih we could see would be a problem if you have a lot of luggage, the communal areas were dingey and uninviting, the lighting is horrible and it looks and smells like an old people's home. And the positives? The shower was very powerful with plenty of hot water and the hostel (sorry, hotel) is within 10 minutes walk of the airport terminal (and we would advise walking to the terminal unless you enjoy being driven around in an old minibus which does not have seatbelts at breakneck speed and which does not leave on time). If you are considering staying at the Clarion, consider again: either pay extra and get a late flight the night before so you do not have to stay at any airport hotel or stay nearer to Dublin city centre and get up early and battle your way through the traffic to get to the airport in the morning or stay at the other airport hotel. Do not do as we did and think you can put up with somewhere horrible for one night just to save a handful of Euros - it will make an otherwise enjoyable trip to Dublin/Ireland end on a sour and depressing note (!)

Definitely not a Four Star accomodation

Staff was very snobbish upon check-in. They were very brief with us. We were surprised that there were no elevators. We were at the end of our vacation and had two large suitcases and two backpacks. Not so fun to carry up and down multiple flights of stairs. The room was okay. It was clean but had many stains in the carpet and repairs to the walls. We tried to use the TV, but it wouldn't work. We phoned the front desk to find out that the hotel didn't have TV right now but they were trying to fix the problem. We headed off to the bar/pub in the hotel but were disappointed that it is closed right now for renovation. The entire night and through to the next morning our TV never came back. Therefore we were unable to get a wake-up call as they are scheduled through the TV. Also, our heat didn't work and they tried to charge us for phone calls we didn't make. On the plus side, the hotel was clean and very convenient in locale to the airport. The shuttle service was nice and there are places to eat in the airport if you don't fancy the Clarion. I'd suggest the Great Southern Hotel just across the road. We did not get any money back or any apologies when we approached about the TV being our only form of entertainment, and it wasn't working.

    € 18 for 1 breakfast !!!

I visited the Clarion Airport one morning for breakfast with a German client on our way to Belfast.

The breakfast was a buffet affair, but there was no prominent notice stating prices or a fixed menu - the staff just said " Help yourselves!". I WILL say the breakfast was 1st class and tasty, BUT when we went to pay, the bill soured the taste somewhat - €36 for 2 breakfasts !!

I sent an e-mail to them afterwards, but as usual these days - not even the courtesy of a reply !

It's definitely cheaper to take the shuttle bus up to the airport terminal for breakfast !

    Go next door if possible

I agree with the previous posts. I arrived one afternoon for a few days. What turned me off was the attitude of the front desk staff. Acting as if they're doing you a favor. Please. And what's with no elevator...its only used for luggage?

The shuttle drivers were polite. Restaurant was good, bar was PA system, so no music.

This hotel needs some help. An attitude adjustment, a little customer service maybe??

Great Southern just across the way does it right and at about the same rate. Go there and have NICE Irish people take care of you. I did on my way out of Ireland.

    15% on top of everything

OK hotel but beware. The rate you are quoted is not what you are charged. There is a 15% service charge. What this service is for, I do not know. The same goes for the restaurant. a 15% service charge, even though I had left a tip which was more than the 15%.

I asked what this service charge covered but was not given an answer except to explain the above. I also explained that I had left a tip, still got charged the service charge! Ridiculous. Go to the better Great Southern just next door

    Pleasant stay.

Stayed overnight before going abroad. Room was clean and modern. Bar and chinese restaurant on site was lovely. Staff helpful and friendly. Was a very relaxing start to our holiday. Only thing I didnt like was the use of the pool at a nearby sports centre, the pool was in need of being torn down and rebuilt. Would stay here again.

Good place to stay night before departure.

Hotel has no passenger elevator so be sure to get a room in the 200's if you have mobility problems. Staff were very helpful. Complimentary shuttle to airport. Would definitely stay here again before a flight - it doesn't get any easier.

    Loved it!

We were laided over in Dublin for an extra night and the airline put us up here. It was very nice. The room was small, but well appointed and it has a very nice breakfast buffet. You can walk to the airport and take a bus into Dublin for 3 euros. Definately reccomend staying here. We stayed in town one night and it was gross!
