This hotel is old and a little run-down, but the room was clean and the staff was friendly. I would recommend this hotel only because it is conveniently located just down the street from the subway station. However, I think it is too expensive compared to overall quality.

I stayed at this hotel during the last week of February. It's a nice, old hotel with friendly staff, free wi-fi connection, and free continental breakfast. It's also got a really nifty elevator (think closing gate elevators from the Titanic movie), though I'm not sure it would be considered accessible to an elderly person or someone with a disability.
Please be aware that there is construction going on right next door to the hotel. Actually, my room was right next to the construction, but that didn't bother me because I was up very early every day anyway.
What DID bother me was that the toilet in my room (419) wouldn't flush properly, and that in the 5 days that I stayed, the toilet paper roll was never replenished.
Breakfast was very basic, but alright. There was cereal, fruit, toast/bagles, etc. available. I only ate there twice and decided to go elsewhere for a more heartier breakfast.
I would recommend this hotel because of it's cheap price and it's location. It's only a 2 minute walk from Sherbourn Station, which made it super easy to get to from Pearson Airport (I took the airport bus that dropped me off at Kipling Station, and then the subway took me right to my hotel. It only cost me $2.00 to do it, versus a taxi or expensive shuttle). While I didn't find much entertainment value in the immediate area of the hotel, being so close to the subway meant I could get to places within 15 minutes or less.

Nice, basic hotel
We had a nice stay here in May 2004. It's nothing fancy, but is clean and comfortable with very friendly staff. The hotel is an old brick mansion with a newer addition in the back. A word of warning - many of the rooms do not have a window to the outside. There are inside rooms with windows that look out on what is essentially a service hallway with skylights. I didn't think it would bother me, but after a few days we felt a bit like mole people in our windowless cavern.
The continental breakfast isn't much to speak of, but it's good for a quick bite to get you started. It's pretty much just toast, muffins, coffee and juice served in a little room with several tables. It actually felt a lot like a hostel.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone on a tight budget. If you can't get a really good rate, or are seeking something special, there are better hotels out there.
Thought it was great
I thought this hotel was great. True, its not in the middle of everything, but the Sherbourne subway stop is a 1min (or less) walk away and from there you can get everywhere thanks to the efficient Toronto subway service. Plus, I personally think that not being based right in the middle of everything means you get the chance to explore more. Yonge St is just a couple of blocks away and has lots (loads of fantastic restaurants, shops, etc.) on it. You can also walk straight down it to the lake front if you're feeling more adventurous (its a very very long street!). There are lots of great restaurants and shops in the area, and, as a 19 year old female, I certainly never felt threatened and I live in what couldn't be called a bad area by any stretch of the imagination!
Our room was large and clean and the bathroom was nice and modern. The maids were very nice and friendly, as were the desk staff who had great local knowledge.
The buffet breakfast, although not massive, had everything you need for fuelling up before a days' sightseeing.
I stayed there from the 21st May-4th June this year (2004) and would definately come back to the Selby Hotel if I got the chance to visit the wonderful city of Toronto again! Not only did I have a great base to see the city, at £250 per person for 2 weeks, I don't think I could have got better value!
We Loved Toronto
We had a wonderful time in Toronto. The weather was great and we got to see the two places on our list; the Hockey Hall of Fame - a must visit for any hockey fan and the CN Tower which is incredible. We should have planned on staying a couple more days because there is so much to see and do. We stayed at the Clarion Inn on Sherbourne, formerly Selby Hotel where Ernest Hemingway and his wife stayed; a Victorian Mansion built in 1880. From there we walked all over downtown, probably walked 20 miles in 2 days. We'll go back someday and spend more time.
Not quite as advertised
After checking out their website - it looked like the hotel was a nice renovated mansion with some beautiful rooms on their website. If they have these rooms, I certainly did not get put into one. The hotel is located outside of the Yorkville area and is in an area that as a single woman I would not walk alone in at night. The roooms were not nice and were very low scale. They were at least clean but old. I would definitely NOT stay there again. To give credit the staff was nice and helpful but that's not enough to make up for the quality of the hotel.
Will never stay at Howard Johnson again!!!!!!!
We stayed at the Howard Johnson for 3 nites. The room was reserved for us by a major company so we had to stay there. Upon arriving to our room, we were both shocked to see how the bathroom doors had a huge crack in it and the smell was horrible! The TV wouldn't work, so we were moved to a new room. There we found blood on the side of the bed...UGH! The same horrible smell and the same cracks. We decided to make the best of it and opened the one window to let some air flow thru. It was the most horrible hotel experience I have ever had! The other people that were reserved there too that were in our group were as equally dissatisfied. On the last nite we were there, we found out that the basement rooms were recently redone and beautiful! They were like brand new, clean and fresh. Wish we'd known that from the start! When we got home I emailed Howard Johnson and they replied with a letter saying that each hotel is independatly ran and its up to management as far as complaints. They forwarded my email on to them and I have never heard back from them.....doesn't surprise me though!
Room 413 bathroom was so so gross- grout black all over, celing covered in mold, "fresh" towles had tootpaste residue and genital hair
bed coverings kind of gross: asked for a pillow and new sheets but was told that none were available.
Staff conduct would imply a terrible mgmt structure don't think anybody cares
room rate was good
Could Be Better
I have stayed at this hotel two times, it is not the greatest but the price is right. I found the staff to be somewhat discourteous everytime I called the front desk to ask a question, they did not want to help me and they constantly questioned me about any guests that visited my room, and told me that if they were staying they would all have to pay or they would have to leave. I have stayed her twice because it is a good price, and in downtown Toronto its hard to find something in a relatively low price range. Like the saying goes you always get what you pay for.
The hotel is very small and cozy. It has lot's history and the rooms have the great 1800 look. Don't worry it is very clean and up to date. If anyone is looking for a great price and in the middle of everything. I recommend it. I give the hotel a 4star because the hotel is different and very rich in history.
The price is right.
It's an old building, but if you didn't already know that then you obviously didn't do any research at all. Great hotel for the price, nothing fancy, no view, but for a cheap, clean place to crash after a night out. Right across the street to the subway, which will take you anywhere you need to go.
The Hotel was old, staff were rude and I WOULD NEVER stay again at this hotel. My flight had arrived late and I checked in at 1AM. The desk clerk informed me of the price which was entirely different then what i had reserved. He then argued with me till I told him I would leave.. then gave me the price I was quoted. I go to the room it was clean, but so old.. It needed some updateing. I then went to bed and woke up to the unbearable light penetrating through the door cracks. the next morning I woke up and opened the blinds and looked out at a brick wall.. When I checked out, and complianed, they did nothing for me..Try another hotel, so MANY mor eto choose from.
