... today. That has to be my favorite saint. Very busy here even though end of season. No wireless interent. We have one more day and we start home. I think we are ready to get home. It has been beautiful here and I have learned so much, but all good things must come to an end. See you all next week I hope.

Francis and al fresco

... was more of a motel than a hotel but we liked it.
Dinner was alfresco at the hotel and we had more success with wine discovering a lovely Italian cabernet sauvignon which we continued to enjoy after dinner. We all gathered for drinks under the moonlight out the front of our hotel after dinner and it turned into quite a late night. We really enjoyed ourselves though, getting to know people better and having some good laughs.

Our last day in Umbria

... lunch we stumbled on a look-out and found a little Italian family having lunch there as well. We scouted a grassy spot under some trees and laid out our quilt and had lunch. We drank our chilled white wine while eating our pecorino cheese, prosciutto, fresh bread and juicy peaches. I took pictures, Marty read until we both dozed off, while hearing the happy sounds of the Italian family under the bright blue sky and ...

Shopping in Campello sul Clitunno

Today Mike takes us for provisions for our picnic we are planning for Tuesday. They leave for NY today and we will be on our own. Mike has us drive so we get the feeling of Italian roads and drivers. He takes to the local butcher, Hugo, an artist with meat. He makes beautifully aged prosciutto, 15 months, compared with the 2 months in the US ...

Too much travel, too little sightseeing

... next to Civita. And I had to get to the other side of Bagnoregio, where a pedestrian bridge led to Civita. It was either a mile walk or a 1 Euro bus ride, but there were no buses for another two hours. So I walked it. But it was a nice walk. The town was very pretty, and it was all level or downhill.

When I got to the end of town, there was an amazing viewpoint that overlooked Civita and the surrounding land. It’s hard to describe, just look at the picture to see how ...

Orvieto must mean heaven in Italian

... right outside my window. They were very loud and playing mostly American music. I had no idea what was going on, but it was pretty annoying. I spent a couple hours watching TV shows on my laptop, and it was nice to have something to do other than sightsee or read about sightseeing. I didn’t bring any books or crossword puzzles or anything like that because I wanted to keep the weight down in my bags.

I was very happy when the music finally stopped just before ...

Travel hell ends in Umbrian heaven

... first of many we are going to see. After visiting their friends’ charming little artists’ apartment we are off to lunch, more wine and great food.

Back home to jump in the pool and take a much needed nap.

That night Mike makes us wonderful pesto pasta, drank more wine and talked into the warm Umbrian night. After our hosts went to bed we made love while moonlight showed in the window and the crickets chirped.

Visiting St. Francis and St Clare's Basilicas

We are excited to visit the Basilicas of two famous saints, for which both have cities named after them in the Bay Area. San Francisco was named after St. Francis by the Franciscan monks and Santa Clara was named after St Clare. Both St Francis and St Clare were born into wealthy and powerful families and both turn their backs to ...

Wine tourism in Italy

... In Tuscany there are a lot of mediaeval little towns like Montepulciano, Montalcino, San Gimignano and of course the Chianti area. The most famous wines are Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Chianti classico just to name some, but there are plenty of other wine producers which have highly qualified wines like Casa alle Vacce - Accanthò. Besides to se and to get known everything about wine, this ...
