    TOURS TO BLOIS

... a little lost coming into town, and rode an extra 3 or 4 kms. Surely we'll get it right sooner or later. At least it's not as bad as being lost in a car, and trying to manoeuvre in traffic. Blois is quite a big city, probably similar size to Ballarat, and has the mandatory chateau, perched high above the town. They must have had plenty of time in the 10th century, as the rock walls are about 50 mts high. Would have taken years. Wouldn't have suited me, I want it ...

    VILLANDRY CHATEAU

... We left our panniers at the hotel, and rode back toward the west, to see some of the Chateau, as we were now starting our cycling tour further inland. The River Loire is beautiful, wider than the Murray but much shallow er. There are lots of sandy banks and sandy islands in the river, and again many people were enjoying the warm summers day. We rode back along the river to the villages of Savoneires, Villandry and Rigny Usse. The chateau were stunning. Villandry in particular had ...

This morning was grey, wet, and the long drive took it's toll on our enthusiasm for Chateau D'Oiron near Loudun. This chateau is quite austere and shows little warmth and sign of having been lived in. The main point is that it has a display of quirky modern art installations. The basic theme is that some of the old ...

Our guests walked 8 kms before breakfast and we spent some time notionally spending the prize from the lottery drawn last night. After checking our tickets at Juan's coffee shop we put together a picnic and spent the day beside the Vienne river and at Chateau Rivau to keep within our original budgets. Rivau, being a Chateau of the Beauvau family who were supporters of the counts of Anjou, was fortified in 1445 and 'Royal stables' were built soon after. Jean of Arc ...

Short, but sweet (the fruit, that is)

In terms of distance, today was a failure. I cycled about 50km through mostly flat terrain.

By any other measure, it was a success. I stayed around my campsite for a long time because I reached a key part of my current book, "Gone Girl", which I finished at the end of the day.

Then, as I cycled, I kept stopping to pick and eat foods: grapes growing wildly along the road where they ...
