... Speaking of driving, the GPS has been a god send. It has gotten us to our destination every time. I'm not always happy about the roads it chooses, but we have made it to our destinations. One minute we are on the freeway going 130 kph and the next minute we are on a lane and a half road in the middle of nowhere going 90kph with bicycles, scooters, hikers, ...

Chateaux of the Loire - Chambord

... Chambord chateaux I was amazed with the size, architecture and to think this was built in the 1500s as a hunting lodge. I found it mind boggling. As the chateaux did not have any of the original furniture and we would be visiting a chateaux each day, I didn't do the visitor tour inside. I wandered the gardens with others and marvelled at the size. During the summer months there is also a market set up in the grounds along with various food stalls. I do like ...

Chambord Chateau. We'd heard that the Chambord Chateau is pretty special, so made a little diversion over that way, much to Treasure's chagrin since it was mostly west, instead of south. But, if you like chateaus (or should that be chateaux...?) it was quite special. It continues to addle my tiny brain, how they built these bloody things, so beautifully, with no equipment, but they obviously did. This was begun in 1521, or thereabouts, and finished, sort-of, ...

In the morning travelled about 60 km to the medieval fortress of Chinon. Chinon dates back to 11 century and is closely associated with the crusades, Ric*************heart and Joan of Arc. It was the key political and military centre in France up until the 100 Years War ended in the early 1400's. Sadly little of it still remains but the fortress walls are still there and several parts of ...

Began the day in the market at Loches. Anne bought a purse and I bought some sox, a watch and some food. The watch for just 10 Euro, so hope it works. Travelled about 20km to the very historical and quaint town of Amboise. Nestled between the river and the castle it has little room to breathe and there is still evidence of people living in the caves of the hill below Amboise Chateaux. The chateaux itself has heaps ...
