On the Sunday I moved bases: from the hotel in Bad Pyrmont, to an apartment for a full week in Quedlinburg, 2 hours drive.

On the way over I stopped in medieval hansa town Hameln for a couple of hours. The famous tale of the rat catcher comes from here, and is exploited to the full.

So funny, on the drive over I came very close to the town where my surname comes from, in the Detmold / Bielefeld region. But I didn't visit that particular village again, it had been quite a long drive as it was and that would have cost me an extra hour.

Bad Pyrmont... a resort town for senior citizens. I was about 30 years below the average age in that town! :-) But that made it feel very safe and mellow.

After 20 hours of planes, trains, and automobiles, we have arrived safely at our destination and can once again sleep in a horizontal position. We couldn't figure out how to use the GPS system in the Mercedes Benz rental! So grateful we had the iPad to come to the rescue. We are staying at the edge of a lake, and had dinner al fresco. I think it might we might call it gyros German style, with red cabbage and French ...

The household emptied in the morning, kids to school and Nadine and Frank to work.

When we were in Berlin a good few years ago, took the train to Hanover to meet up with Pat and Eckard. During our day with them, went to Herrenhauser Gardens, but as it was February, not at its best. You could still appreciate the fine bones and structure of the garden, but shades of grey and browns. Consequently, ...
