Departing Sicily and hello Nice

A travel blog entry by jpulvirenti1

An early morning start, Peter and I farewell Fiorella before Nuccio picks Netty up and drops us off at Catania Airport. We bid Nuccio Goodbye and we were the first to check in our luggage. Through the security's gate we made our way to the gate to board our flight to Nice via Olbia, Sardinia. Departing can feel so final that it leaves an empty …

Cruising the Côte d'Azur, Provence, Burgundy to Paris Sunday, October 14, 2012 Our Delta flight left on time and arrived 30 minutes early. I actually slept a few hours. Getting to Nice

A travel blog entry by khillski

We arrived in Nice about 8PM and by the time we get to our hotel and settle in it's well after 9PM. A long day but we are finally here. The Hotel La Malmaison is a lovely boutique hotel with only 41 rooms in the heart of Nice. The standard rooms are adequate but small compared to US standards.

Nice lies in the eastern portion of the Cote …

Nice, the Mediterrean Sea, and the "beach"

A travel blog entry by abalzer

Thursday, June 24, afternoon in Nice, France

After getting back from our morning of touring we had the afternoon to explore Nice. Most of the students wanted to go to the "beach" and swim which was ok by me I was ready for some down time so to the beach we went. Now as much as I have enjoyed Nice the rocky “beach” is really …

    Clean and convenient

We stayed at La Malmaison in May 2005, F1 Monaco GP time, so Nice was very busy. We needed a hotel close enough to the train station yet central enough for bars/restaurants and the Promenade Des Anglais. The location of La Malmaison was perfect, midway between the station and the beach. We stayed on a room only basis and chose not to have breakfast (10Euros per person for buffet continental) but only because of our early starts. The hotel has recently been refurbished in the main public areas (also the oustide facade has been altered and doesn't resemble the pictures on many websites) and some refurbishment was still ongoing on the upper floors (we were on the 2nd floor), however we were not disturbed by noise or workmen (but we were away all day). The delightful looking pavement restaurant that is shown on various websites was also closed and looked like it too was due for refurbishment. The room we had was not typical of those featured on the web. We booked a double room but were allocated a twin. Although the room was rather small it was perfectly functional for our needs - I would not have been too happy if we had gone for a two week beach holiday. Whilst the public areas have been refurbished the bedrooms had not, not sure if they are going to be but judging by our room they need to be. The staff were friendly and accommodating however there seemed to be only one employee who spoke/understood fluent english (a good test for 'o' level french!). The hotel was very very clean. On the whole I would certainly stay here again - the price was very competitive and most importantly the hotel was clean.

    Loved it!

After refusing to stay one night in our original hotel in Nice, the Hotel Gounod because it was rundown and filthy we walked down the block and found La Malmaison. This hotel has been completely remodeled with new carpets, paint, mattresses, bathroom fixtures. It looks like they did a complete remodel from top to bottom. The staff was pleasant and helpful. We had a lovely bright large corner room and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The price was also less than our original hotel. They only thing I would suggest to them is putting a shower curtain up in the bathroom. I don't know what the French have against shower curtains!

    Terrible hotel

i stayed at la malmaison for 3 nights in june. what can i say? i have never stayed at such a terrible place in my life. knowing that it's a 3 star hotel, i was not expecting anything special. but i was shocked at a state of it. the hotel has definitely seen better days. it badly needs complete refurbishment. furniture i believe is back from 1920s, well, at liest it looked like that. generally dirty. shower was not working proparly. staff could be much more helpful and so on. if you want to enjoy your time in nice, do NOT stay at la malmaison.

    Historic and friendly, spacious rooms.

We stayed a week there. The room was cleaned and towels changed everyday. Room spacious. Staff friendly, giving good advice when asked about.Evidently this hotel is for the people who like tradition and history. If you are looking for modern aluminium and glass - the Malmaison is not for you. They allow pets, for me it's very positive. On the roof there is a pretty terrace. The neighbourhood is nice and safe.

    The La Malmaison has ants!

I DO NOT recommend La Malmaison. The first room we were shown, the shower and lights didn't work. We asked for another room & it was a bit better. We didn't find out until later that the place has ants! It's really no surprise as the place just isn't spotlessly clean - generally run-down & dingy. (We don't mind a bit old, but there is no excuse for dirty.) To top it off, our quoted room price was upped on our arrival for "Easter weekend rates." Nice is expensive, but you can do much better for the money La Malmaison charges! Needless to say, we left the next day.Note: I was labled "difficult" by the man at the desk because I wanted a room with working lights & no ants at the price we were quoted. I'm so demanding! :)

    Threadbare and dingy

The title pretty much sums up my opinion of Hotel Malmaison - it has definitely seen better days. Very threadbare towels and linens, weird mismatching decorating, and generally kinda dirty and yucky. European hotels are very different than American hotels, but even by European standards the Malmaison does not deserve a 3 star rating. Also, our room did not have a shower - just a French-style bathtub with a showerhead/hose that you have to hold as you wash.Positives: the location is pretty good. The hotel is on a nice street about 4 blocks from the beach and within walking distance of the old quarter and market.

    Good Value and Location

My room was quite large for a three star hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant was excellent. There is free Internet access in the lobby. The hotel is located on a major street in a lovely residential neighborhood where there are several hotels and restaurants. It is within easy walking distance of shopping, the beach, and Old Nice. I stayed here a year and a half ago and am returning in a few weeks.
