Daily life in Prey Veng

... for the neighbors and my current family does not actually eat together anyways but takes shifts in front of the TV and the table in the kitchen. I'm sure that my routine will change within the next few weeks as I start to teach alone at the RTTC and cement my timetable but that's also part of my routine here, never getting too settled and keeping a good sense of humor when life takes an unexpected turn...like finding scorpions on my bedroom floor.

Walking Through Cambodia's Tragic Past

... six, 150, 450; these were the bodies of headless soldiers, these were women, children, babies... Today, these holes are filled only with dirty, rancid pools of still water, cordoned off by bamboo fences so no one can step into these mass graves.

I overhear a guide saying the holes are now filled in more than they were then because of decades of exposure to the elements. They were once 6 meters deep. Full. It almost doesn't register. Almost. Then she ...

Or photos.

We left a day earlier than planned as there wasn’t a huge amount there to do and the incessant rain became enough to drive anyone out of the city. The rain did however result in one of the best moments of Cambodia for me. On the first occasion we set out to visit the royal palace we got stuck in a ...

Its many gold covered buildings & Pagodas make it look like the palaces in Bangkok.

Behind our hotel was the daily market selling everything to eat & many things you wouldn't want to eat. The crunchy frog satays looked particularly avoidable. The hygene standards left a lot to be desired, especially on the meat stalls.

Cambodia is the most land-mined country in the world, which is ...

... tuk tuk drivers fighting for our business. Turned out we were all going to the same place, an area called the Lakeside. Useful. Joining forces they managed to barter a driver down to US$2, and all 5 of us squeezed into a single tuk tuk along with all of our bags. If they can do it, so can we! Being unfamiliar with the area but with the guidance of these lasses who had been here ...

The slowest, friendliest train on earth

... named it Kep sur Mer, is a somnolent settlement of rotting Normandy villas and bamboo shacks beside a pacific sea that hardly ever manages to raise a wave at this time of year. We were stationed in a huge room within a modern-built guesthouse next to a dark sandy beach. Soon after we arrived, Tim turned up, looking confused and talking about cabbages; we put him straight. As the sun went down we ventured down to the shore where a collection of fishing shacks serve as the only ...
