The land of Senegal

Let me be honest with you all this isn't about any great adventure i've had or even will had but perhaps may very well have a trip to the desert land of senegal. You see dear reader i'm embarking on a literary adventure regarding the land & people of Senegal with a book titled " Walls of Jericho" a narrative of the perilous journey of a group of ...

Port of Call for the big cruise ship

Ocho is an interesting city, divided by a straight line, on one side (from the center to the port), relatively safe area day and night, upscale boutique, restaurants and on the other side, the chaos and not so safe area. There are a few hundreds meters of beachfront.

Just landed... Welcome mat

I got a ride from the airport to the upper town. After check in, I ventured in the city and was soon offered some "stuff". Oh well, no thank you. The Bob Marley museum is quite interesting and probably the only notable attraction in Kingston (other than this feeling of being in a different country).

Possibilties Realized

... The goal was to educate an offer a forum for all those in attendance to learn and share ideas on the environmental problems in the community and how best to fix it from the experts. The theme of the expo was "Working Towards a Picture-Perfect Community." A couple of weeks before the expo, my students and I went around the community taking pictures of things in the community that has a negative affect on the environment and or on their health. I developed the ...

Leaving Out

... way to drive through. Come to the Shell gas station. They're turning that fork into a round about it seems. So never mind the dust and confusion (and the fact that the gas sation looks like it's sinking) - just go right. Now you start seeing the Caribbean Sea. Pass through Annotto Bay and the little towns along the sea side. At Windsor Castle (Hart Hill), if you are a ...

Part Two: Use Gloves. Please.

Over the past two weeks, amidst classes and studying, I've met with the agency staff at Dare to Care (an orphanage for HIV-positive children) for the volunteering/internship component of my graduate program. The team at the agency's downtown location (a facility for teenage orphan boys with HIV) agreed to meet with me first. To say that I was moved by the experience would be an understatement. The staff greeted me warmly when I arrived, and spent ...

Being Introduced to Gustav

Dear Friends and Family: This morning, we began our first day of school with hurricane watches.  The morning skies were blue and absent of Hurricane Gustav as Karen and I walked to the bus stop.  By midday, the clouds had rolled in and a thunderous rain was pounding on our classroom roof.   In less than a half-hour, the first atmospheric wave of the storm had passed over, and the skies were clear.  We were let out of class ...

Slow Boat to Kingston

... early, which was even better - but Trenton went back in, to a cash machine inside the port perimeter. Faced with a choice of amounts, he chose $200 as being reasonable (you'll see why this is of interest, later). Driver was intent on giving us a guided tour; we just wanted a taxi downtown. (In hindsight, we agreed he was right; it would have been better. He did have some history and so on.) Having got downtown, we agreed a price and ...

Yea Mon - Me' Live Ere

Rogean's Entry Dear friends, November 6, 2004 Greetings from the hills of Ewarton nestled in the foothills of Mount Diablo. We are getting acclimated to the local rhythms sights and sounds. Sure there are long lines, the human crush boarding buses at rush hour, taxi drivers that compete to get more passengers per square foot and those that give you rides for free in the pouring rain. Ya-cris man. (You owe me nothing.) There are even days when I can really say. "Yea mann - me' live ere ...

I Came. I Saw. I LEFT!

This was a horrible nasty little place I hope to never see again. When you walk down the street, it is filthy and taxi drivers nag at you and then throw insults when you refuse to take a taxi. I Came. I Saw. I LEFT! One almost saving feature of this hideous place was swimming in the water, but even that turned south when I felt what I believe to be a sewer pipe under my feet.
