Hotel Rwanda as NOT told by Hollywood

... it is, and how its supermarkets put Albert Heijn to utter shame (not that hard, but TIA you get my drift, we were blown away, HP sauce, maple syrup, veuve to chill....and also the LARGEST PACKS OF ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING I HAVE EVER EVER SEEN! Although the “whitening cream” for ladies was not THAT large).

It was soon time to head out and meet Courtenay at the downtown Bourbon cafe (also just round the corner from us). Having managed a free ...

Kigali...capital to a nation that turned the page

... has stood apart in its openness to advice and consultation with foreign bodies and individuals. The result? A Kigali International Airport that puts Jomo Kenyatta to shame. A city of thousand hills where new, beautiful homes are springing up everywhere. Where the locals go to the sports bar and watch Manchester Utd v Bolton and have a good time. A coffee shop like Bourbon which would put the average London Starbucks or Nero to shame so clean and enticing is ...

The African Staff Meeting

... will all fall into place. (NB: It didn’t fall into place. Cancelled and postponed indefinitely. Imagine that. Unfortunately for me, despite my desire to go, it was rescheduled with little more than 12 hours notice. I got a call on a Saturday afternoon around 4 pm telling me I needed to be at school the next morning at 5 am for the trip. When I told them I was drunk already, not even remotely close to being in Kayonza, and where they could put ...

Ignorance is bliss....

... anything happening to me. The roads, the buildings, and the infrastructure is all very close to being as modern as back home (with the exception of the roads which are actually better). With the lack of communication and possibly the lack of education I always saw the Nazi attrocities I saw when I was in Germany as something that could never happen during my life time. I was saddened to see that not only had it happened but that I was never aware of the magniture ...

Finally Silverbacks

... but I sure didn’t want to be looking up the nostril of an elephant. Michi was up at least once an hour and in the toilet for about half an hour each time. I had the pleasure of standing outside the gents for the duration in the pitch black sometimes putting on my flashlight and scanning the area. Not sure why, coz if I had seen anything close up I guess I would have been a big girl and screamed! The advice from our intrepid leader should we encounter any animals was ...

Some rest at Camp

... satisfaction they arrived about 10 minutes later, having been released after Mr. Mundeli’s patient and calm explanation, and no doubt the intervention of divine favor, convinced the policemen.

We started the seminar at 10:30. Greg Swartz gave a PowerPoint presentation on opposites. “What is the opposite of stealing?” he asked. Rwandan Camp: Day 3

This morning again we met at 7:30 for breakfast: fruit, fried eggs, bread with peanut butter, jam or honey, and Rwandan coffee or tea which is quite good.

We were ready to roll a few minutes after 8:00 and stopped shortly after leaving to buy more bottled water. We then dropped Greg off at the Ministry of Health where he had a 9:00 meeting with an assistant to the Minister. This was to move forward the dossier of recognition for Smile Rwanda. The rest of us ...

Rwandan Camp: Day 2

... to the food budget and he said he thought we could work that out.

In the afternoon we had more sports activities: Frisbee followed by volleyball and football. When I later asked what the favorite activity was, the universal answer was Frisbee. We laughed (kindly) with one another as the campers and local staff worked on being able to throw and catch the plastic disks. After each activity, the staff would ask the campers to reflect on what they had ...

Camp prep in Kigali

... as we drove toward the airport, we could see the Kenya Airways plane on final approach and landing. The airport is on top of a hill, so it’s easy to see planes coming and going.

Daniel and Cindy arrived on time, and cleared formalities without any delay. We drove back to the hotel, where they checked in and got some bottled water for the night. We agreed to meet tomorrow morning at 08:00 for breakfast and a planning meeting for the camp which will start tomorrow afternoon.
