    Easy Location, Comfortable Stay

The hotel is right next to the airport, which makes it extremely convenient after a long set of flights. Though we've only just arrived, the reception staff was friendly and helpful, we have vouchers for breakfast, there's free wifi in the rooms, and the bed is comfortable. Beyond that, the room is clean and modern.

    Is There a Doctor On-Board?

Today (or the sequence of two days, really, given the international date line) we flew from Detroit to Taipei (or actually just outside Taipei, to where the international airport is). Tomorrow we get on the high-speed rail and head for Tainan.

The flights were blissfully (okay, maybe not blissfully) non-eventful. Neither of us got much …

... Unlike other clothing markets I've been to, this one actually had popular, on-trend clothes, rather than cheap goods. The little alleyways were packed full of people and scooters, with plastic bags full of clothes on the floor and good looking people shopping around.

Feeling exhausted, sweaty, and a little confused by Taipei, we grabbed crisps from the 7-Eleven and headed back to the hotel to work out what there actually was to do in the city. We decided to go to ...

... We always try to learn a few words to help us get by and Xie Xie is one that we often end up using.

After visiting the memorial we were taken to a cool handicraft market. Cool in more ways than one. It was indoors and air conditioned! Phewwww. By this time we were just soaked with sweat and the thought of walking around outdoors was not appealing at all. We picked up some Ooling tea and also an interesting looking tea laqeur. We ...

... fed and exhausted (thanks Johno - what a week). Cocktails in the best bar in town, a Taipei thunderstorm, an authentic Taiwanese friend and subsequently a beautiful necklace, bubble tea, white turnip cake (the best thing), a traditional Taiwanese breakfast of warm salty soy milk soup, and a hell of a lot more but I just heard my boarding call...

... a good ol' time, bantering with friends on Facebook (we are 12 hours ahead here) and having some excellent breakfast dumplings in a very beautiful and bright airport in Taoyuan.

With still time to spare, figured I'd get to the gate early and sit there. Along the long walk back to the gate, a Taiwanese airport official walks quickly towards me asking several people something. To me, he asks "Is your name Ed?".... nope. After ...
