Amsterdam to Cape Town

Getting up early, we traveled through the morning traffic to Amsterdam Airport. My brother was already waiting, so we checked in very quickly. Flight was long, but comfortable. We landed as scheduled, and took a taxi to the hotel. Tried to find an open bar at the V&A Waterfront, but unfortunately they had already closed. Went to bed.

Finally wandered off to the remnants of the fashion and body painting extravaganza with a nice buzz.
Lots of people there in a carnival like atmosphere. Great introduction to SA night life. got some photos which i'll upload later.
By the way the meal and wine only cost about R700 for three so at about $AUD33 was ...

Back in Cape Town

... the car and on the road) would slow him down but no dice! Later that evening......Back from Table Mountain and VERY happy we made it. We had to run from the car to catch the last tram up at 5pm. Felt old and extremely out of shape...and sort of like we were the losing team on the Amazing Race as we made it by the skin of our teeth at 4:58pm. The silver lining is that it turns out it is a good thing it's been rainy ...

Backpacking

... the time I leave here. Two thirds of the Western Cape province population speaks Afrikaans so I can definitely practice it here. We have had two social-economic development classes so far and I can tell that I'm going to like that class too. We are actually doing a volunteer placement for that class where we will be volunteering once a week for 6 weeks a social welfare/development agency. That should be really interesting so I'm excited for that.

Township tour and absieling Table Mountain

The last day of the tour we went to the township of Khayelitsha which is appropriate I think since all of us will be working with children from townships. As we drove in the first thing I noticed was a sign that said "Don't Stare At My House". Township tours have become quite popular in South Africa and I'm guessing that the residents are beginning to feel like they are being exploited. Fair enough but even the tourists who only do "touristy" stuff can learn a great deal about the way ...

... commercial bungy from the Bloukrans Bridge, at a height of 216 metres (708 feet). I had previously jumped the 134m "Nevis" in New Zealand, but this one blew it away. The whole group got on really well and we had a great time. On our way back to Cape Town, we stopped off at Cape Agulhas, the most southerly tip of Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet. I had a couple of days spare in Cape Town before moving on and had booked a trip to Robben Island, where Nelson ...

I'm Still on Vacation

... word final paper and a group project/presentation. So that's that. Since I'm not trying to get concentration credit for anything, I was free to choose my classes without restrictions (except to add up to a semester's worth). I love that I've never felt constrained to a single department while in college. I think the requirement of a concentration or major is mostly useless and even though I technically have one, in reality I don't, and that's just what I want ...

India, South Africa!!

... ever been in my life!! We waled around the top of the mountain before riding the cable car back down! Tomorrow we embark on a 20 day tour of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. We are very excited (its cost us a small fortune!) and we are going with 24 other people, which will be very odd as most of the hostels we've been staying in have been empty! Don't know when we'll have internet access again, so our next update may be in another 20 days!!! Going to try to put photos ...

Finished Coaching

... so impressed that we have vowed to do the Ironman in 4 years time!! So I had better start training now (actually I have been running loads and feel pretty fit, so all I need to do is concentrate on the other two disciplines!!). On wednesday we had a day off coaching, it was a public holiday and a small group of us decided to walk to a beach called Sardegna Bay. Unfortunately I can't upload my photos onto this blog, but if ...

Christmas and New Year

... at a friend's house but New Year's Day was absolute carnage. I played in the annual golf tournament on one of the Stellenbosch vineyards (very poorly I might add) and then serious drinking commenced at about 12.30 with champagne. How I got home that evening is a bit blurry (thanks for the lift Robert) but it meant that I left for the airport at 4am the next morning feeling rotten. Photos to follow from the professional photographer who covered the event!
