      ... 1970s. It was chilling listening to various politicians justifying the policy.
      We then went into Soweto which is now a city in its own right. We walked past Mandela's house and along the streets were the riots took place. Our tour driver is from Soweto so gave us an insight from his side as well. Soweto is now a desirable place to love and there are white south africans moving there as well as it is cheaper ...

      ... it is. Wished for space bed!! 20 minutes from landing, able to open blind on window. Very dry flat land. Patchwork of fields, not many trees, a few power stations (?coal).       ... treated to a dance. The final stop was the Hector Peterson museum. Hector Peterson was a 13 year old boy shot dead by police during the 1976 student uprising. The government of the day had declared blacks would use Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools. This was a massive obstacle to the blacks getting an education. Students across Johannesburg gathered on June 16 in Soweto to march. Hector was the second student shot and the image of him being carried ...
