Historical Traveler Reviews of Citigate Sebel Sydney
Nothing special
from elsie mackay
While our initial impressions of this hotel were good, spacious room and helpful desk staff, because of the poor dining facilities we would not stay there again. The dining facilities were poor. On 2 nights of the week the dining room was closed and we could not even buy a drink. We were directed to a cafe-type dining area below which was nothing special. One night when we did eat in the dining room, we waited for an hour for our starter, and then were neglected, no-one came to ask if we wanted coffee after our meal. The hot breakfast was awful, cold sausages, bacon like leather and that was at 7.30am. Goodness knows what it would have been like by 8.30. We felt this hotel was possibly geared towards business people and tours and were not prepared to give individual guests the attention. Relatives who also stayed had to ask twice for clean towels and their room was still not made up at 5pm on one occasion. We had travelled throughout NZ, Tasmania and Sydney and this hotel was the poorest.
Lousy Overall, unfriendly & unhelpful staff

This hotel was recommended by Flight Centre, and we paid $180/night which included what was known as "continental breakfast". We stayed for a total of 3 nights, and it was the worst hotel we've ever stayed at.
On arrival (I was 5 months pregnant) we were ignored by the porter, who seemed more interested in something else as I struggled with my luggage up the ramp. Reception staff were extremely unfriendly, and we waited for about 10-15minutes to finally be served when there were 3 reception staff there, 2 of whom pretended to be busy doing something else, leaving one guy to do all the work, including answering phone calls and serving other guests before us. There was no offer to take our luggage, and I had to ask if they can send our luggage up to our room. (I mean, can't they see I'm pregnant and we had 5 bags - which my hubby couldn't carry all by himself??)
We ordered room service dinner that night, and it was awful! The wedges were soggy and the pizza which cost $15 was the worst we've ever tasted! (we soon found out there's a Domino's around the corner with MUCH better and cheaper pizza).
Breakfast the next day was hosted by a condescending and unsmiling team leader lady who seemed to be on a power trip and bossed all the other staff around (and not in a nice manner either). We were shown to a table, and weren't told to help ourselves to the buffet. So we asked (since it said CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST, and not BUFFET BREAKFAST on our prepaid receipt).. and she looked at us as though we were idiots! And in her condescending voice told us that breakfast WAS the buffet breakfast! Oh ok, guess we should be mind readers. I should also add that the breakfast is identical day after day (no change in variety), yoghurt is lukewarm, and hot food is awful - especially the soggy tasteless scrambled eggs (I get nightmares visualising it).
Overall, a most disappointing stay. Check-out was as bad as check-in. We asked them to send a taxi at 10.30am, and to send the porter up before then so we can make it on time to the airport for our flight. No porter came at 10.25am. So we called again. In the end, we had to drag our luggage out and bumped into the porter who finally made it around 10.33am. The taxi came midway while we were settling the bill, and the reception desk guy had the nerves to say - Oh the taxi is early. EARLY? It was 10.45am!
I would like to rate this hotel as 0 Stars, but since the lowest is 1 Star, I'll just give them that. You won't catch me staying at this place ever again, even if you pay me!
Great hotel

Lovely hotel with friendly, helpful staff - The rooms are very clean and ours was extremely spacious with sofa sitting area. We had breakfast several times at the buffet and also ate at the restaurant in the evening - both are very good (the waiter is very accommodating). I consider myself to be quite a fussy person and would have no hesitation in staying at this hotel again.
Nice, clean and efficiant.

We stayed three nights at the Citigate Sebel. The hotel had very good facilities for the price you pay. The rooms were spacious and clean with nice bathrooms and the all important powerful shower! The staff were excellent and had no qualms about letting us check in early (07.00). It is not the most central (30 min walk to harbour, 5 mins to china town, 20 min to central sydney) but the train station is only about 2 min walk where you can get to the habour for about $2.50. The only down point was breakfast - we didn't have it included in our booking and it was a bit exoensive for what you got. Overall though a good hotel with excellent staff - i would stop here again.
Excellent

Excellent Hotel. The room was very spacious, spotlessly clean, and the beds were comfy. The staff were extremely friendly. The pool/hot room/spa was a great bonus.
We are definitely staying there again!
Good value for Sydney
from sjanes
This was good value as Sydney is not cheap, especially at the weekends. You are not dead in the centre but Central station is only 5 minutes walk away and from there you can be at Circular Quay in 10 minutes. The rooms were a decent size and nice and clean, the fridge was a nice bonus I didn't expect. There is a handy laundry in the basement and a reasonable choice of restaurants about 10 minutes walk away. There was some traffic noise but that is just cities for you. I grew in the country and find all city hotels noisy, I just take earplugs.
V Disappointed !
from edmiller72
After seeing the reviews we stayed here for 3 nights. V dissapointed. Reception staff were unfriendly. Air Con was poor. Put in a smoking room when asked for non-smoking. TV had 4 channels ! Very busy road kept us awake most of the night as did the room above (warning - walls are v thin). Didnt get 1 good nights sleep. Had previous stayed at the carlton crest and hoped this was better, it is worse ! On the plus side, location is good and so is the pool (altho dirty)!
Very Central

Hotel was lovely, staff very helpful, close to central station - within walking distance downtown Sydney. We got a 5 day Sydney pass excellent system.
Helpful staff especially concierge Martin
from miccat
The rooms in this hotel were spacious and clean.
Staff was friendly, especially concierge Martin for whom nothing was too much trouble.
Great was the fact we could check in early, after a flight from Europe you need some time to get relaxed.
Location is great too, easy access to Central Station and downtown Sydney.
Great Location

Good clean hotel, helpful and pleasant staff, don't forget to use the pool. Great location, handy for Chinatown.
