We took a group/tour bus from the airport to our hotel. I got stuck behind the bathroom. All I can say is, wow. Gross. Yesterday was the last day in Beijing. We went to the zoo and then caught the plane to Xi'an. I thought the start of the zoo was interesting. Around 1900, a Manchu hugh official returned from a long journey with a special gift for the Empress Cixi (she has great story too). It was a number of animals, mostly from Germany. To accommodate the, she had an old park transformed i...
Xi'an, Shaanxi, China hjbarraWe went to see the terracott warriors yesterday. It was so cool. The first emperor of China decided he wanted a full size army guarding him after he died. It took 700,000 people over 34 years to build. It wasn't discoered until 1974 when some chinese farmers were digging for water. ll of it still isn't uncovered. The warriors were originally brightly colored and after the are uncovered, it fades, so china is waiting until tey know how to preserve the color. At least that's the story we got. E...

... buried about a kilometer from his tomb would protect his soul from evil spirits. These soldiers are unique---no two are alike. There are foot soldiers, calvary soldiers, archers, and chariot drivers and drivers. After the Emperor Qin died, the peasants revolted and raided the tombs of the terra cotta soldiers and broke and destroyed many of them. Then in 1974, several farmers were digging a well and they unearthed pieces of the soldiers. We got to meet one ...
Xi'an, Shaanxi, China setochina... any rails. Making it to the top in plenty of time to see the view and sunset. There were 2 other people
already there. We all climbed a little higher to the best viewing spot, which enabled you too see all of xingping and the mountains in the background. Yet again let down by the weather, the sky was to humid for us to see the sunset, it disappeared into the mist before setting properly behind the mountains.
Xingping, Shaanxi, China brad.leah... Let's Go. But this was a normal map for normal people and it was still useless. It was even in Chinese. Seriously, I give up. Me and maps just don't seem to be meant for each other. Which I suspect means I am destined to spend an awful lot of my future being lost. I stayed in the hotel room long enough to Ooh and Ahh at the air conditioning (to be charitable, my air con in Jinan has had a little bit too much personality recently and my bedroom probably makes hell seem ...
Xi'an, Shaanxi, China iolairYesterday, I arrived in Xi'an. In Shanghai, it was quite heavily raining, and I was even happy to use my rain jacket and rain protection for the back pack. Otherwise, it would have been so useless taking them all the way to China. In fact, as always it seems, I took too many things with me. But that's another story. Xi'an is world ...
Xi'an, Shaanxi, China autpitWe saw something truly unique here. We saw large groups of Chinese citizens standing properly and calmly in line, or queue for our British friends. Sadly these were only clay statues, but still it was very impressive. For anyone who has ever been to Chinatown in SF, you know what we mean. I have seen more westerners in this country get upset when a local citizen moves in front of them and gets to the window first to get ...
Xi'an, Shaanxi, China thomasmb... now that it wouldn't cost them anything. They still wouldn't, but said that I could use the phone in my room to call them which completely contradicted the sticker on the phone saying: "No outside calls"! The moron of a receptionist had no idea what what I was talking about when I asked for the number of the operator so I had to pay for the call anyway. After getting the helpdesk to call me back they told me that they had put a block on my card as there had been a lot of activity ...
Xi'an, Shaanxi, China mattislost... met. The cycle was pleasent, but unfortunately a thick mist made visability pretty poor and we didnt se much of the city. after the cycle we hit the city sights and markets. Xian is really small when compared to Beijing, but it has a lot of history to it as it was the capital of china for so long. Unfortunately time constraints meant we werent able able to see al that we wanted to, but for now its a flight to Chengdu!
Xi'an, China cblackwood... assist him to rule the after life. The tomb itself was made on a map of China and was (is) solid gold. The two great rivers of China (Yellow and Yangtze) were made of mercury. They have found the tomb site, but are afraid of excavating as they have found traces of mercury and are not sure what the effect of excavating will have on the mercury. So for now they have the site, but have not dug any deeper. We spent the day finding out how they made the ...
