Still in Halifax... for 12 more hours, lol!

Well, after complaining it was hot and muggy yesterday, today it RAINED alllllll day. And not a friendly warm rain either: hard pounding pouring drenching rain! So out the window went all our plans to do the "touristy" things I wanted to do, like see the Citadel and the Maratime Museum, and off to the mall we went. Kirsten at least was happy LOL. We have new accomodations for when we get back to Halifax on the 17th ... at the Citadel Hotel, we decided (ok, its my money, *I* decided) that we n...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Citadel Halifax Hotel

Sporco. Maleducati.

from charmol

Sucio y maleducados

from charmol
El título lo dice todo, es un hotel completamente deprimente y sucio.

Un personal maleducado, nada servicial y no ponen el menor cuidado; no tires tu dinero aquí, hay sitios mucho mejores en la ciudad por el mismo precio.

Dont stay here

from woolfiepompom
we were staying at the marriot but needed to stay longer and the hotel was booked, the only hotel in halifax that was available for the extra nights was the citadel. We were told all they had available was the business suite for 169.00 dollars a night we thought that was pushing it a bit but we thought as it was a business suite it might be ok but that was before we saw it! The hotel looked as if it was crawling and i was scared to sit down as the furniture looked so filthy that was if you could see anything it was so dark . The room was very tired looking and the bathroom was awful this hotel needs a serious refit or it needs to bring its prices down to motel level. i have to say the porters were lovely and couldint do enough for you also the dining room staff were pleasant. to sum it up i would suggest only staying here if you have no other choice.

Not The Best Choice In Halifax

from Lovedealsandquality
My husband and I stayed at this hotel at the begining of March. The draw was the casino and the pedway system in Halifax. While the pedways are great, this hotel was not. It really really needs to be updated. The balcony was a bit scary as it didn't seem to be level and the door should have been replaced long ago as it didn't shut properly and was really cold! The bathroom was pretty run down and the room looked as though it had not been updated in quite awhile. I have stayed at a few motels in Dartmouth and, although you obviously can't take the pedways from Dartmouth, I would pick there over this hotel. The staff was not very friendly and even almost lost my friends Visa card. They sent it upstairs somewhere with another staff member thinking that it belonged to someone else. Not very smart I would say. I not recommend spending your hard earned dollar at this hotel-there are many more in Halifax and Dartmouth to take advantage of! You don't need to be taken advantage of in this hotel.

Had a great time!

My husband and I stayed here in August 2005, during Natal day festivities. While the rooms are a little tired, I disagree with the other (negative) reviews entirely! The hotel is close to everything, the staff were fantastic and the parking was plentiful! We had not booked ahead of time and chose to approach this hotel based on location alone. The rate of $149 seemed high to us but we were given a top floor suite with a king bed, coffee maker, hairdryer, good quality toiletries and a great view of the harbour. Best of all, they included parking in the rate as well! There was a full sized desk, with ergonomic chair and computer hookups. The windows opened to outside so it was nice to be able to get some fresh sea air.

The best part about our stay was the staff! The concierge (actually several of them!) helped us find shopping, recommended restaurants and stored our shopping bags for us while we went to dinner, so that we wouldn't have to go up to the room. They were friendly and cheerful and made us feel welcome! Even the parking attendant was great! He chatted with us on several occasions and definitely proved how great the people in Nova Scotia are!

I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a great location, friendly staff and nice rooms. It's not a 5-star by any means but it certainly is a friendly, comfortable place to stay.

Praise outweighs the pans

I was wary to stay at the Citadel after all the negative reviews. I found a lot to like. The room we had was exceptionally spacious and included a convertible sofa in front of the windows. Yes, the furnishings are not super-fresh, but all was clean---and I am very fussy.

The staff were always friendly and helpful. This really paid off for us when my traveling companion left behind some clothes in the room. He only discovered their absence after several days. I called The Citadel and yes, they had found his clothes. Luckily, we were coming back to Halifax and picked up the items. Thank goodness for the honesty of their employees. (We've forgotten things at other, fancier establishments but somehow those hotels never found our lost items!)

They have an internet-accessible computer in the lobby. It's almost always occupied. They should consider putting it in a less busy area (its own room, perhaps).

It's an easy walk down to the harbor through the pedestrian walkways.

Don't understand the negative reviews...

The Halifax Citadel is a perfectly serviceable hotel. We stayed here through a Scotia Prince travel package and had no problem with it. The $9 parking was mentioned to us in advance, but after reading about Halifax's tight parking problems, I was glad to not have to worry about parking. (The concierge will validate your ticket so that you can come and go at leisure if you plan on using your car during the day.) It is within 5-10 minutes' walk to major attractions. The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was clean and had everything we needed (ice, blow dryer, coffee maker). As for the noontime cannon shot, we were at the Citadel itself when that happened and I would hardly compare it to Iraq. Every guidebook mentions the noontime cannon shot so this shouldn't take an informed traveler by surprise. It's not the Four Seasons, sure, but saying that it's worse than Motel 6 is a bit extreme. If you want fresh flowers and a jacuzzi bathtub in your room, don't stay here. If all you need is a clean, safe place to hang your hat that's walking distance to most everything, it's a good option.

Hated the Citadel

The hotel does not look like the pictures, it reminds me more of a Motel 6. Motel 6 has better features, as they tell you that it's for "sleeping" only. There is a $9.00 per day parking charge that was not mentioned prior to booking. The hotel is right next to THE CITADEL (the old fort) and a cannon is fired daily at noon "for tradition sake". We thought we were in a war zone. There are a lot better choices, don't choose this one.

Worst than Motel 6

This hotel is nothing like the advertisement says. We were there for four nights and if I had not paid in advance through Expedia, I would have left and found other digs. I should have known something was not right because the rates continued to drop on their web site over the weeks prior to booking. I thought I had a "good deal", but instead they were unloading a "dump" and I was had. The beds were old and soft that each day we woke up with backaches. The rooms smelled like a nursing home, and children constantly ran up and down the hallway all night. I had to call security many times to get some silence. The hotel does not tell you that everyday at noon, cannon is fired that sounds like the Iraq war zone. We actually thought we were being bombed. No one bothered to tell us that it happens M-F. Bottom line, NEVER AGAIN!

Nice spot to stay

We stayed at the Citadel Hotel a couple of years ago. The rooms were very nice, the staff was very pleasant, and the location superb. From the hotel, you could comfortably walk to all the main attractions.
