Sigiriya, Sri Lanka emeric.bensaci... the strong winds and tiny steps hit into the rock at strange angles were a little daunting to climb. It was horrible and i really hoped that i didn;t have to go back down the same steps as going down is always worse... well it was definately an experience.... although the school kids had no trouble with the climb in thier little flip flops!! The view at the top was amazing , but a little misty to take a photo and very windy. On ...
Sigiriya, Sri Lanka mandy_karl... that everything revealed in structure on the right, is mirrored by identical designs on the opposite side of the site (these haven’t been excavated yet – deemed to be left for future generations!). It was here that I saw a pair of the most beautiful brown-throated kingfishers also enjoying the water features!!

The water gardens have been symmetrically laid out to include bathing pools, mosaic and pebbled pathways, small water islands with ...
Dambulla, Sri Lanka lyncravenWe stayed in a dinky little guest house near Sigirya rock for 2 nights. Had a decent room with mosquito and a fan. One morning I was woken by a splash and a squeal from the bathroom. Rebecca had gone to use the toilet and in order to flush it we had to lift the back off and press the lever. Only as she'd lifted the back off, she'd discovered a frog sat on the lever, as it jumped at her, another ...
Sigiriya, Southern, Sri Lanka laurenw86... into a book. The ones the monks made in the olden days are really cool because the papers are long and thin instead of the standard wide paper we are used to (they use the bamboo leaf which is thin). They then cave whatever they want to write with a sharp instrument to make an indent in the paper and then push ground up coal into the indent for the letters to show up. It's a really cool technique and a monk made one for Greg and myself to take home (for a ...
Minhintale, Sri Lanka carrienica05... to move down the mountain thinking this was bit extreme for rain. One of the guides ran past me and shouted hornets! People were literally running for their lives. I was not scared but since everyone else was freaking out I high tailed down the mountains as fast as I could. Behind me I heard the loud angry buzzing and screams of pain as people were repeatedly stung. I ended up running with a local guide and a European ...
Sigiriya, Sri Lanka hildreth75... After Sigariya, one of the bikes broke down. It promised to be a real pain, stuck by the side of the road waiting for the non-existent AA. Instead it proved yet another opportunity to marvel at the big heartedness of the Sri Lankan people. We were overwhelmed with offers of help and ended up with the village equivalent of an F1 team of mechanics working away while we ate sweet pineapple. En route back to Kandy we stopped in to see Tom's ...
Sigiriya, Sri Lanka vague-abonding... place. Day 4 : Saturday 27th December 2008 Dambulla, Sri Lanka I woke early - and when the alarm next door went off (Michelle & Sam) and they started talking we got a bit worried about having kept them awake with our cockroach and inane chatter. At breakfast I headed over to apologise - they said they didn't notice. It turns out they were on a very similar tour to us - a day ahead but having an extra day in the middle - so we ended up seeing them often and ...
Dambulla, Sri Lanka skcoll... just a little bit mad. However that can work both ways! While hand on heart I can say that they are possibly the friendliest, most gentle people on earth with a warm easy-going demeanour (its a bit like discovering a race of Asian Canadians), they all clearly have nothing but the highest disregard for their own mortality. Asteroids hurtling through space navigate with more precision than Sri Lankans display on the road. Not once in almost a month in the country did I see a driver ...
Weliveriya, Sri Lanka kealderra... a vystoupat vsechny ty schody nebyla zadna sranda, obcas to bylo uzoucky a hned vedle sraz... malem me z toho chvilema klepla pepka.
