Dambulla Caves and the Spice Gardens

A travel blog entry by mariaobrien on Aug 01, 2014

13 photos

An easy enough start this morning as bags were packed and ready to go, so after breakfast we headed first to Dambulla where four caves lie on top of a hill. On ascent a mixture of steps and raw rock eventually lead you to an area where you hand over your sandals and proceed barefoot on extremely cobbled ground. Four caves of varying size lie ahead …

... sierra is definitely a place to visit. Hostels don't exist here./ Jon informed me that the Sri Lanka government like discourage Back Packers. However do some research and you can find cheap guest houses. 8-15 pounds a night, I'm currently staying at the Sevana Guest House, a simple but comfortable place, with a great rooftop terrace offering a decent view of the city, The staff are very friendly and very welcoming.

... a cripple the whole way up and battleling the 1ookm hot wind trying to pencil the plummet in. Gradually I reached the top, sweating, shaking and minutes later Deb followed holding a shirper and an italian ladies hand. The veiw from the top was incredible and worth the pain and anxiety attacks. We wandered around in the wind but it was so beautiful I couldnt care less if I blew off. After a few photos we held our breath and closed our eyes and made the decent slowly and scared to ...

Walking with elephants

... Ranmenika, bananas when we greeted her in the morning, after we treated the wound on her head and when we said goodnight at the night beds. We discovered she really enjoyed king coconuts, she would bite the nut, eating one half and carrying the other half in her trunk for later.

With our weekends off, we decided to visit the nearby Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. Unlike MEF where the elephants live individually the elephants there live as a herd. Walking up ...

Colombo to Kandy, Sri Lanka

A travel blog entry by chris_and_laura

... Kandy. The train journey to Kandy was very picturesque and there were some friendly locals in our carriage who borrowed our guide book to practise English. Despite arriving at night, Kandy was immediately more appealing as a place to visit, with the centrepiece lake lit up beautifully. We caught a tuk-tuk to the "Majestic Tourist Hotel". Kandy is a lovely place, a bit milder than Colombo. The lake at its heart beside the Sacred Tooth Temple and many other shrines and ...

would recommend, it is a bit out of the way but getting a tuktuk is no trouble. they wait out the front, taxis are available too. the food is lovely if a little pricey, but very convienient. the bar is also great if not a bit pricey too. the rooms are very clean and the a/c works brilliantly as well as the wifi.

The View from our room is fantastic, it overlooks the pool, but if you look further you can see the River. The decour is fantastic, the whole place has a nautical theme (was very interesting seeing a 20something wearing a sailor uniform who was just a conceriege).
Another downer for this place, was our room instead of a double sized bed, actually has 2 singles push together. Which is basically the same thing, but it will make snuggling hard.
I am very happy with the selection of teas, so it's alright.
