would recommend, it is a bit out of the way but getting a tuktuk is no trouble. they wait out the front, taxis are available too. the food is lovely if a little pricey, but very convienient. the bar is also great if not a bit pricey too. the rooms are very clean and the a/c works brilliantly as well as the wifi.

    Great view

The View from our room is fantastic, it overlooks the pool, but if you look further you can see the River. The decour is fantastic, the whole place has a nautical theme (was very interesting seeing a 20something wearing a sailor uniform who was just a conceriege).
Another downer for this place, was our room instead of a double sized bed, actually has 2 singles push together. Which is basically the same thing, but it will make snuggling hard.
I am very happy with the selection of teas, so it's alright.

Dambulla Caves and the Spice Gardens

An easy enough start this morning as bags were packed and ready to go, so after breakfast we headed first to Dambulla where four caves lie on top of a hill. On ascent a mixture of steps and raw rock eventually lead you to an area where you hand over your sandals and proceed barefoot on extremely cobbled ground. Four caves of varying size lie ahead …

... at a lovely (not) looking place at the side of the road. Since both of us had tummy troubles we didnt eat much, but when setting off again the tuk tuk broke down. Not a funny situation in the middle of nowhere with threatening toilet issues.

The tuk tuk did restart in the end, but I was pretty terrified the rest of the way especially winding up the mountains that it would happen ...

... here overtaking vehicles have priority.

When I arrived at the foundation I was greeted by elephants, mahoots and the other volunteers. I was shown around the complex by Tamsin; the head co-ordinator. I spent the majority of my first day trying not to fall asleep; luckily in the evening there was a pub quiz organised by one of the volunteers in the bar adjacent to the foundation. After a few Lion beers and some shots of arak (The local spirit) the night went well but ...

... monkeys around and John stopped to take a photo. As he did so Rhianwyn noticed rice etc falling on him - a monkey who we had seen grab a bin was checking out the contents from the tree and throwing what he didn't want at John - we quickly moved on! Our hostel was very basic, again there was a lot of wildlife, one night a gheko came in and made a laughing sound at us, taunting us because we couldn't get him out from under the wardrobe! The two ladies who run it were so ...

Days of plantations & hill country (28 Feb -2 Mar)

... but since the seventies, the forest has gradually been cut down, buildings are being constructed these, combined with climate change has made the temperatures there rise, so wasn't that cool there. As there are fewer trees and therefore food, the monkeys and warthogs now venture into the town, the
monkeys get all over the place including through windows, so the place is also now interspersed with loud bangs to scare the monkeys (and make the tourists ...
