I knew it It was obvious to me, but no one else can see it as clearly as I do. The pandas have started and not only are the giant pandas mining, building and sharpening bamboo sticks, but the red pandas have begun scouting the area and breaking out. At first we thought it was fog but as we stepped out into the grey abyss and took our first breathes of the thick smoke they call air we knew what it was. If you were to try and picture the smell of china find your closest ash tray and rub the contents up your nostrils, then try and breath through your nose without suffocating. Hard, isn't it. ...

Joel's friend in Tokyo is taking a long, long time to complete his thesis. Joel writes a prayer to Confucius to speed along the process. We hope the prayers are answered.

Our next stop is Chendu and hopefully Mimi's brother and after that we have decided to head into the Tibetan highlands.

Tomorrow we head for the terra cotta ...
