      ... flashing lights drew attention to these signs. We did see deer but truly, the promised bears in the brochure are still sleeping. The deer were scrounging for fresh growth under the snow. A few ice huts and brave fishermen stood on some very thin ice, crazy. Very impressive is where the river cuts in an S-shaped pass through the mountains, forming the Gap.       ... for poor visibility we were ducking in and out of the channel to avoid Navy traffic.

      During the trip down anything that wasn't fastened down below ended up on the floor in the salon. Left Annapolis at 2 Monday and arrived at Top Rack Marina at about 2 this afternoon. Rewarded ourselves with a great dinner out at the Amber Lantern Restaurant. Early to bed. Up at 5:30 tomorrow to get underway at first light.

      ... As we approached Virginia Beach we were buzzed by FA 18's fighter jets overhead! We soon found out we were camped near the Navel Air Station Oceana, the only Jet Base on the East Coast. We were serenaded with their daily training flights - or the sound of freedom! One night we had helicopters (I think) overhead until 1:30am YES in the middle of the night! They seem to be doing circuits for hours & hours. Needless to say we were not thrilled ...

      ... and fried. Once the meals were eaten the room emptied except our touring party of adults, the girls went up stairs where there was a ring to shoot and all the boys left. So we left there for the motel and sat at the bar for a while and had a couple of drinks. Back to the room for a couple of Sam's, checked facebook and did some blogging.

      ... totally skunked. But on day 3 after the wind returned we were making good time with full mainsail and genoa in SW winds of 12-16, producing boat speed of 6 to 9 kts. Not long after dawn we hooked some sort of billfish – identified by seeing the head and bill break water – but we never positively identified it as it soon escaped via a broken hook.
