After an uneventful drive, we arrived in Bressanone(Brixen) in the evening, just in time for some home cooked food prepared by friends, followed by a game of cards played with an interesting deck of cards. Hoping for better weather we went to bed with the aim of reaching Belgrade the following ...

Trento is a surprise package. A city of approx 120 000 based on education and finance this city is located on the river Adige, a major trading route with Europe in earlier time, and completely surrounded by snow covered mountains. Spectacular.

... or education likes to focus on. We rather prefer the narrative of our heroic struggle and sacrifice in this war of "Good" versus "Evil". We don't like to think about the terrible price innocent people had to pay for our "good deeds". I head out to the streets, giving time for it all to sink in. Trento has certainly made a full comeback, has a beautiful historical core, and a charming fountain piazza with the mountains just a stones throw ...

... more mechanized than an American one. It's getting late as I reach Bolzano. The train passes through a large industrial area, and then the train drops me off in front of a couple austere Mussolini era buildings and statues. Definitely doesn't feel like the Alps here. I check in to a hostel, chat a bit with my roommate, an American from Idaho who somehow landed a gig caretaking for a farm in Tuscany! Right now he's ...
