The parents visit

Last week my parents came to visit me. It was very nice to see them again as it was the first time in over 8 months. Dad didn't believe it was me when we met because of my bleached hair and 'castaway' beard. Mum could finally relax and I could finally go to a restaurant again. I was very pleased to be on easy street again. We ate out (spending a week's budget on a meal), hired a car, and went on two boat trips. The boat trips were my highlight of the week. I'd never done ...

Easter in Tobago

... however, had different ideas and ended up further away than the starting line. In the evening the party began. In Tobago this means big speakers out in the street and plenty rum. The guys would just come up behind them and start 'wining' (a dance of grinding ...

Limes and Doubles

... not ripen until we have left. We were looking for some limes for drinks and discovered that not only do they not have limes as we know them, but "lime" more often means "party." When you hear liming, or lime it is always referring to a party or get together and not a fruit. As for double double...in Canada to patrons of Tim Horton's it means one thing...in Trini and Tobago it means ...

Out and about - the Tobagonian wilds

... and confirmed as part of the flock, whilst we watched in bemused wonder. As Karen said, it was quite a touching experience. More simple were the 'rotis' we also discovered here - the Caribbean equivalent of a meat/shrimp/potato etc pie. If we'd found these, and the whole Mt Irvine experience a lot earlier, we would have been even happier with the ...

First Taste of Caribbean Life

... that this wasn´t a taxi "I´ve got to go that way anyhow, I give you a lift". Raymond, our ´taxi´ driver used to work for Barclays bank, and had been to London many times, and shared with us his view on life during an entertaining 15 minute drive to the Thrifty car hire. Andrea said afterwards that it was a shame that we couldn´t hire him as our personal tour guide for the week. We collected our car, a Suzuki Jimny jeep-type, and were ...
