The next day we took the Shinkansen train (and oh my, it's fast!) all the way up north to Hakodate in Hokkaido (the most northern island of Japan). The countryside along the way reminded us very much of Switzerland. Apart from volcanoes and the sea there are lots of similarities.

Arrived in Hakodate and found a Rider's house, best one i stayed at and at the same time the least friendly people. Men and women sleep in different rooms and both were packed. I tried carefully not to roll onto my neighbour during the night and crush her.

We were up early and on the metro to Tokyo main station (Tom was even so eager we got off at the wrong stop and had to board the next one!). Once at the station we completed a very efficient exchange of the voucher for our Japan Rail Passes and reserved our seats on the 8.20am Shinkansen (bullet) train heading north ~700km to Shin Aomori. How has this hotel rated in the past?
A very nice hotel - it was arranged by our tour guide and price was included in the trip so I don't know how expensive it was.
