Another great SUNs (Single & Unaccompanied NCOs) Trip! This trip was originally called "Man vs. Food & Wild Snowmobiling Excursion", but after a less than stellar review of the 2 Foot Tall "Mt. Hakodate Burger", the food only became a challenge if you were not a seafood lover. ...but more of that later.

The next day we took the Shinkansen train (and oh my, it's fast!) all the way up north to Hakodate in Hokkaido (the most northern island of Japan). The countryside along the way reminded us very much of Switzerland. Apart from volcanoes and the sea there are lots of similarities.

... are many shops selling fresh fish (seafood) to whoever. And by fresh I mean fresh. A lot of the fish, crabs, squid, shellfish etc. were still alive. And in many of the places they would cook it for you ( extra price no doubt) and you could eat it there ( standing of course - no just kidding. Some places had chairs and tables). The size and scope of the market puts the Auckland one to shame, and this town only has a population of 300,000.
... biggest. Crab we have ever seen about 4k these crabs are famous for this area but not cheap around $40US minimum each and the huge rockmelons were 35US each. Japan is not cheap. I'm sitting in this quaint little coffee house writing this blog. The weather outside is overcast around 22 C. Terry has taken picture of Hakodate but we haven't download them on to the iPad yet.

Someone in our group thought that each car could take 120 people but we don't know if that is true. Whatever the number, it was a lot. Dinner had been booked at the ryokan for 7:30 pm. A very nice hotel - it was arranged by our tour guide and price was included in the trip so I don't know how expensive it was.
