Friday 11 Sep 15 – Xiamen

Arrived in Xiamen (~Zowmin) right on time at 7am to a rather smoggy morning – but fine. Had to get moving early as we had to be ready to leave the ship for our tour of Xiamen at 7am, so breakfast was at 6am and a 5:30am wakeup. The port is about 2 hours up a river estuary and this is done at slow speed, particularly given the size of the ship.

Foreigners, after the Opium War, would settle here. Like everything in China, getting here was not easy. I ended up getting a taxi to the ferry port as it was only 10 minutes away from my hostel. We have never seen so many men wearing women's sun hats. You know, the ones with pretty pink lace, flowers and veils on them. I have wanted to take photos, but am too polite. It has, however, ...

... back at the bar, Tom is 83 and he was getting stuck into the drinks too, nearly time to start detoxing!! We stayed at the schooner bar for a little while, then said goodnight to all our Aussie friends and headed to our room. Once back at our room, I always check our newsletter called Compass for activities for the following day, then mark off what we will do then I sit for an hour or so adding photos and writing stories for the Travelpod, always something to ...

Had a lazy day today staying around the Hotel Indigo. We walked down Zhongshan Lu and had lunch at Aijsen Ramen, one of our favourite Japanese restaurant chains. We then wandered back to the hotel and had afternoon tea sitting up in the restaurant area overlooking the harbour and Gulangyu Island, unfortunately not warm or nice enough to sit outside.
