... The next morning Kaiping picked us up and showed us around campus. This is a picture of the Psychology Department at Tsinghua. It beats the hell out of Berkeley. In fact, it was just finished being built three days ago, so it's pretty fancy.
Then we took a tour of the neighboring (and more famous) Peking University. It is kind of like the Harvard of China and has the same old rustic charm. While walking ...

She was preparing to leave for Hong Kong to find another visa alternative when she was informed she would have to pay another 5,000 RMB again, as she had overstayed her visa beyond the 10 allotted days after paying the previous fine. Sisca didn't want to pay. She was way short on cash at this point, and had been led to believe she could renew her visa by various government ...
Beijing, China happysheep... hadn't anticipated my request would be such a problem, but he refused to give me his dictionary. The other students were urging him in Chinese to cooperate, but he just got more and more angry. Finally I told him that he had to leave the class. He was wasting our time, and I wouldn't tolerate him disrespecting and disobeying me. After a five minute battle, he left, but I was a little shook up. Finally, we made it to the hotel and my intuition had been right. The taxi was 118 Yuan not 480 as I had been offered at the airport! (100 Yuan is basically $13 US dollars) First impression of the hotel......."Boys we're not at the Conrad anymore"! With that being ...
Beijing, China kingmahi... our welcome dinner tomorrow. It is 10:30pm and I am exhausted, but sit and negotiate patiently for over an hour with a waitress who spoke little English at a beautiful restaurant right next door to the hotel. I put together a set menu, selecting from some very exotic sounding dishes, like spiced pigs feet. It will either be a culinary triumph or a total disaster. That review will have to wait until tomorrow's posting. Hugs, Dan
