Day 285 5 hrs, 8 kms Day Totals: 16 hrs, 29.6 kms Technically I'm in Italy, but as my friend in Flies reminded me, this region is historically and culturally part of Austria. Even now it has some autonomy, with it's own transportation system and education system (German first, then Italian) All the towns have both German and Italian names. The whole area still has a pretty Austrian "feel" to it. My first town Curon Venosta, is actually a ...

It's kind of a surreal feel, after hours of nearly impenetrable cliffs and fierce river gorges--thinking I'd left all land suitable for human life behind--to find a peaceful idyllic landscape high up on the mountains--a Shangri-La of sorts. Day 283 4 hrs, 8 kms Strengen has a peculiar landmark: a covered bridge that looks like a bunch of random pieces of lumber attached together, all crooked, looking like it could fall over at any time. Just seems really out of place here in Austria where everything it seems is made to perfection. Does look pretty cool ...

... the top of the cliff, having to backtrack into town. Another trail climbs, high, high up through the village and into the forest beyond. A jolly farmer offers me a ride on his tractor... but no... can't do that. Then after a short walk, the trail starts to zigzag down to the road again, not far from where I started. I figure I'll just walk along the road for a while. Can't win 'em ...
