A lazy morning by pool before golf

The weekend revellers are absent in the morning and we enjoy the beautiful outdoor pool set-up in peace... no pumping music and only a few other punters. Hilli reads, dozes in the sun, crochets and swims. Guy combines reading, scribbling and the occasional dip with visits to an equally quiet spa area. Lovely. The hotel runs a bus-shuttle service to a beach it advertizes as its own... the 'lighthouse beach'. Guy decides to investigate on ...

Balchik, Russian mafia and call girls

We drive to Balchik itself on a road which stays about a mile in from the sea along mostly limestone cliffs. It winds down through the town until it reaches a small harbour area. On one side of the harbour are rather decrepit industrial workings plus old fishing boats and, on the other, is the face of capitalist Bulgaria doing its best to mimic an Aegean village. On our thirty-fourth wedding anniversary (it really is!) we follow the canal going east out of Bucharest until the motorway to Constanta... yup, another motorway, but this one dates from a lot further back and passes through the most featureless country imaginable. There aren't even any trees, it seems, for tens upon tens of miles of scrubby plain. Guy and the Raven get seriously depressed and more than a little ...

... your main actually with the main…we didn't complain of course, we're British don't you know! Bulgarian food also seems to be fairly bland. They think everyone wants to eat pizza! And you have to be very specific if you want a cup of coffee - you get espresso or it might be latte… maybe even a cappuccino. If you order tea, it could be PG Tips, or it might be Green Tea… Who can say? However they do have excellent ...

Windy weather and really interesting golf partners

... each weekend 3-4hrs to play here because there are no golf courses in Rumania.

The course was tough and in the wind very tricky. I really liked the course and ended up with a good score, much better then yesterday, a course I didn't like... By the end we were windswept and retreated to the nice clubhouse to have a beer and lunch with our playing partners. They were very keen golfers and played every weekend in ...
