For once it turns out Abs' complaining whilst being dragged up a mountain and around temples was justified. Even the other side of the world she managed to cause some drama, for her poor mum and dad...always the drama queen. Brad wants to note that he tried to take her to the hospital a few days before, but she was adamant that she didn't need to …

Bangkok to Chang Mai and The Honeymoon Tale

Hi all First the honeymoon tale - Before we came away Derek had contacted the travel company with a view to arranging something special at the hotel for our anniversary on the 14th. Somehow this seems to have been sent to all the hotels we are staying at (and there are quite a few) and some of them have interpreted it as our honeymoon! Yesterday …

Last night we ventured out later for dinner due to our late lunch. I learned a new thing about Andrea, like my husband, she does not miss a meal and plans her dining far in advance. Thankfully, due to the oppressive heat, her usual hunger pains have been less extreme and rather unnoticed until I was informed last night that we needed to go to …

We are back at the sanctuary, home to both us and royalty. This evening, while arranging tomorrow's Thai massages at the Chedi’s spa, the staff informed us that the prince and princess of Thailand will be staying at the Chedi this weekend as well to attend a wedding. We were totally unphased by this bit of information. In fact, we expect …

After such an active day yesterday, it was necessary for us to spoil ourselves a little—we definitely have been abusing ourselves on this trip. We began the day participating in the merit making tradition. Our hotel prepared meals and flowers for us to distribute to the local monks. We tried our best to do it properly, but I know I managed to …

Historical Traveler Reviews The Chedi Chiang Mai, a GHM Hotel

    Fabulous Hotel, Perfect Location

    from trvlmnky

This is a wonderful hotel, and staying here added so much to our visit to Thailand.

The location is perfect - you can walk to everything in town from the hotel (although the tuk tuk drivers might not let you) but it is also set back from all of the hustle and bustle which creates a truly serene resort environment.

The hotel design is fabulous. The pool is surrounded by lilly pads and overlooks the Ping River (and they provide lemongrass facial mist and cold towels the entire time you are at the pool). There is tons of open space with comfy couches and day beds and at night the entire place is lit with candles (you can order dinner from the restaurant and eat outside on the couches...very romantic). The spa had a great design, especially the post-treatment rest area, and great service. We had a standard room which was perfectly sized for our needs and, fabulously, every room has a balcony with a day bed and chairs and candles outside!

There were only two drawbacks: the breakfast, which was just not up to the standard of the rest of the hotel and the prices for drivers/guides is ridiculous considering comparable services in the area.

    Absolut fantastisch

    from anonymous

Einfach fantastisch. Übertrifft jede Erwartung - die Zimmer, das Schwimmbad, der Wellnessbereich und das Frühstück. Man könnte es gut mit dem Ritz-Carlton / Leading Hotels of the World vergleichen.

    Ultra cool

    from wojiaotian

We spend three wonderful nights in a standard room at the Chedi. The design of the hotel and rooms is great. The location is great if you want to explore the town (compared to the Four Seasons and the Mandarin Oriental, which are far out), and the spa is one of the best I've ever been to. The hotel has free wi-fi even at the pool -- great for those of us who take working holidays. The only two things that I would complain about is the traffic noise, which dampens the calm atmosphere when you walk in the halls (though I couldn't hear it in the room). Also, the breakfast, while more than adequate, could be stronger for a hotel of this quality. Staff was great, and helped us many times.

    Loved the Chedi!

    from shellx

This hotel is a perfect working example of what the hospitality industry should be trying to achieve! (If you like boutique style and not huge high rise!)

From the moment we arrived, with two teenage children on tow, we were treated like royalty! We were seated at reception overlooking an ornamental water lake, served lemon water and hot towels and welcomed by the manager! We were subsequently shown to our minimalistically smart rooms by efficient and charming staff, who took the time to explain every detail and working feature!

The magnificent breakfasts were served to you by at least two if not three staff, with nothing too much trouble!

The only negative aspect was to do with the location as opposed to the hotel itself......and that was the abundance of mosquitoes at this rainy time of year! The Chedi, however, places mosquito spray and plug-ins, at your disposal.

We took tke advantage of doing great trekking in the area but if you only do one organised trip...make sure you try a cooking lesson with Kachana at The Kae Hom cookery school! A wonderful time was had by us all!

We reviewed this hotel as excellent.....and as The Princess of Thailand brought her entourage for dinner....we dont think we are very far off the mark!

    Tranquillity

    from reddinton

Amazing Hotel. We arrived at the start of the low season (a great time to visit Thailand) and the place was very quiet and immediately we felt relaxed after a long journey. We were bumped up to a superior delux suite either because we were on honeymoon or because it was low season or both but the room was fantastic. We also received a complementary mini-bar, broadband with laptop and champagne breakfast. Our only regret was that we only stayed 2 nights before hitting the road. The restaraunt was quite nice for dinner but very expensive with portions not particullarly large but the breakfasts were lovely. We also availed of the spa which was a great if quite expensive. In fact the food and drink and the spa were outrageously expensive when compared with prices in Chaing Mai but I suppose that is to be expected in a hotel of this quality. There is a very nice restaraunt near by - The Whole Earth. Otherwise, I can't praise the hotel enough, so serine and peaceful despite the hussle and bussle outside. Not actually sure what it cost us as it was part of a package but if you are staying in Chaing Mai and have a few quid to spare I highly recommend it. Anotherexcellent restaraunt in Chaing Mai is The Gallery by the way, definetely check it out.

    Absolutely fantastic

    from anonymous

Just fantastic. Absolutely beyond expectation - the rooms, the pool, the spa and the breakfasts. Compares very favourably with Ritz- Carlton/ Leading Hotels of the World status. We were upgraded to the Chedi suites - wonderful rooms - 2 day-beds & a free mini-bar!

Can definately recommend the Chedi massage - really great for any couples visiting as you can both have massages at the same time - very luxurious spa.

This is a city centre hotel - the grounds are lovely but you will hear some traffic/ noise but this is at a very minimal level. The view from the swimming pool is over the river - shows real life in Chiang Mai (e.g. some run-down buildings).

Overall just fantastic and can definately recommend it. Hotel bars/ restaurant/ gym and staff all top standard.

    An Excellent Hotel

    from anonymous

Spent six nights in a Club Suite in April 2006 and generally found everything to be first class.

The facilities are great and the staff polite and helpful.

Having seen both standard and club rooms (we were initially given a standard room by mistake)I would take the club room every time.

If I must make one small negative observation, the facade of the building to the main road consists of vertical timber rails with spaces between. This does allow some noise from the road into the rooms that run parallel with the road (which is all of the club suites I believe).

    What a great hotel

    from yakan

My husband and I stayed at the Chedi Chiang Mai for two nights. The exceptional service started with our free airport transfer (comes with the club suite service) in a Mercedes Benz luxury car. We arrived to a white building, which from the outside, looks quite plain. However, when we got to the lobby, we were thoroughly impressed. The lobby was nicely decorated with simple furniture overlooking a fountain adorned with floating lotus buds. We were escorted to the second floor for the club suite guest check in where we were offered a delicious lemongrass infusion drink and ice cold towels.

Our room was gorgeously decorated with a simple, modern thai look. The room is about 900 square feet with a sleeping space, small dining area, lounging area and a large bathroom area. The amentities in the room included free minibar items (club suite only), a Jura coffee machine, Bose stereo system, and a large LCD television. There is also a large balcony with lounge chairs.

The service of the staff was very friendly and helpful. They helped us plan our tour and we truly enjoyed the itinerary they suggested.

If you decide to stay here on your visit, definitely utilize the great spa facility and the swimming pool. The spa services are a bit more pricier compared to those you'd see advertised on the streets, but I'd suggest paying a little more just to be certain that you will truly get great service and a relaxing experience.

Chedi is definitely a great hotel to stay if you're visiting Chiang Mai.

    Serenity by the River Ping

    from anonymous

We truly feel blessed to have chosen the Chedi for our stay in Chiangmai. As with most hotels managed by the GHM group, the Chedi, Chiangmai is no exception to the professionally managed luxury hotel chain. Having been to both the Datai in Langkawi (4 yrs ago) and The Chedi Club in Ubud just recently, I dare say that we were again impressed with the amount of effort GHM puts into making their guests feel special and privileged. All hotel personnel are warm and accommodating. The grounds and facilities are kept in pristine condition. The highlights of The Chedi are the superb architectural designs and interiors which are done tastefully in contemporary Thai style and truly deserve a mention in the Conde Nast. As a matter of fact, so impressed are we that we are writing this review by the pool, courtesy of their complimentary wi-fi connection.

We can honestly say that the few pictures in their website's photo gallery do little justice to the hotel. This hotel is highly recommended to couples and serves as a perfect base from which to plan your day trips and shopping spree in the Night Market just minutes away.

Just a word of advice if anyone's pondering over whether or not to splurge on a Club suite (which comes with individual butler and other services), the deluxe room is more than sufficient for the average traveller.

Superb ambience and escapism close to night market

    from Neshikins

I stayed at the chedi for 3 nights. The hotel is superbly designed, and offers a tranquil escape from the nearby night market. The rooms are beuatifully designed and furnished, with LCD wall mounted TV.s Free use of laptop either in your room, or wifi on the grounds- great touch. The reception area is nice enough to chill out in and read or have a drink. The restaurant and bar area are set in the old british consulate, both are decorated superbly, offering a touch of colonial charm with trendy textures.

The staff in all areas were attentive, happy in their jobs, and most of all helpful without the suffocating you!

The breakfasts were excellent, with a buffet continental breakfast, and your choice of a cooked breakfast. The eggs benedict were great.
